In addition, we are committed to advancing the understanding of orthodontics for such patients and, accordingly, are committed to evaluating our outcomes, interpreting them in light of new knowledge, and striving to improve our clinical care. Overview of the Clinic: Our Services and Patients
The Clinic is part of the world-renowned Broadbent Institute for Craniofacial Care & Research located within the School of Dental Medicine (Department of Orthodontics) at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Established to provide the most advanced orthodontic dental treatment for craniofacial anomalies, including craniofacial syndromes and clefts of the lip and palate, the Clinic also offers care to children with complex malocclusions (misalignment of the jaw and/or teeth) and those with special needs due to Down Syndrome, autism, spina bifida, or other complicating factors.
More than 400 children from across Northeast Ohio are currently patients--and many will be treated into adulthood. Although most patients come to the Clinic during childhood, adult patients are also welcome.
Our Medical Team and Staff
Dr. Manish Valiathan, MDS, DDS, MSD
Program Director
Dr. Valiathan completed his initial dental (BDS) and orthodontic training (MDS) at Manipal University, the top-ranked dental school in India. In 1996, he came to Case Western Reserve University and re-trained in dentistry (DDS) and orthodontics (MSD).
A tenured associate professor with appointments in the departments of orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and plastic surgery, Dr. Valiathan is the founding program director of the Craniofacial and Special Care Fellowship Program, a joint endeavor of CWRU and University Hospitals Case Medical Center. Certified by the American Board of Orthodontics, he is an active contributor to the Craniofacial Biology Research Group at CWRU.
Dr. Mark Hans, DDS, MSD
Department Chairman
Dr. Hans graduated from Yale University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, in 1975. Following graduation, he entered the dental school at Case Western Reserve University where he received his Doctorate of Dental Surgery (DDS) in 1979 and his Master of Science in Dentistry and Orthodontics (MSD) in 1981.
During his education, Dr. Hans was honored several times, winning the Harry Sicher Award for Best Research by an Orthodontist Student and being granted a Presidential Teaching Fellowship. As one of the youngest doctors ever certified by the American Board of Orthodontics (1989), he continues to maintain his board certification. He has been affiliated with the craniofacial program since 1987.
Our Technology
Advanced CBCT Imaging
The clinic strives to stay up-to-date with the latest innovations in orthodontics so that we can provide safe and thoroughly effective orthodontic care. Our cone beam CT (CBCT) scanner provides immediate, high-resolution 3D images of patients’ mouths, including the jaw bones, teeth, and facial structure; it allows us to use 3D mapping tools to create a detailed treatment plan for even the most complex cases.
Digital Models
Digital modeling allows us to create a three-dimensional digital model of a patient’s teeth. After we create a personalized treatment plan, digital models allow us to create customized bracket trays that let us place brackets all at one time, with increased efficiency and overall effectiveness.
