Orthodontics Internship Program

The internship provides 11 months of training in clinical and didactic orthodontics. This is a non-accredited program sponsored by the Department of Orthodontics and directed by the Chairman of the Department. It is considered a full-time program of study due to the combination of didactic and clinical practical hours. This program is not eligible for financial aid.

Objectives

The goal of this internship is to provide clinical and didactic training in all phases of orthodontics, beyond the scope of undergraduate dental education. Among the areas of emphasis will be the use of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images for diagnosis and treatment planning, wire bending and biomechanics, cephalometric tracing and analysis as well as facial growth and development.

Requirements for Admission

Candidates must have a DDS degree or its equivalent and have documented clinical experience in orthodontics. Foreign graduates are encouraged to apply. All applications must be received through PASS. Since the PASS application is the same as one for residency, the applicant should email Graduate Studies to alert that is an internship application. Emails should be sent to dentalgrad@case.edu, or call 216.368.1168. An application must be received with a $145 non-refundable application fee at the dental application fee website. Official transcripts from all colleges, universities and dental schools attended including GPA and class rank and three letters of recommendation must be submitted.

Program Overview 

Candidates selected are eligible to enroll in didactic coursework. Each intern will design their course of study in consultation with their assigned mentor in the Department.

The clinical component consists of a laboratory portion and patient care portion. The patient care portion will commence only after it has been determined that the clinical skills performed on the laboratory typodont have been satisfactorily completed. The patient care portion consists of care of patients deemed appropriate for the fellow in training, and includes, but is not limited to, placing and removing orthodontic appliances and wires; diagnosis and treatment planning; dental impressions for fabrication of appliances and for diagnosis and treatment planning.

Progress will be evaluated quarterly by the assigned mentor. Upon satisfactory completion of the program, the participant will receive a certificate of completion of an Internship in Dentistry.

Research Internship - Orthodontics

  • Degree/Certificate: Research Internship Certificate

The Department of Orthodontics accepts research interns on an ongoing basis. Requirements to be considered for a research internship include holding a DDS degree or equivalent, and having completed advanced training in Orthodontics. 

The internship is at least 1 year and offers no financial aid. Interns are expected to financially support themselves. Priority is given to applicants with faculty appointments who are trying to further their academic career. Research interns will be assigned to a mentor in their area of research.
