SPANGLER, BASIL L. (1822-19 Jan. 1876), dry-goods merchant who served as assistant quartermaster in the U.S. Army during the CIVIL WAR, was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Miller Spangler, who came to Cleveland from Stark County in 1816 and entered the tavern, hotel, and real-estate business. SPIRA, HENRY (21 June 1862-10 Apr. 1941) was a banker whose principal customers were the immigrants settling in Cleveland during the first 3 decades of the century. Spira, son of Bernath and Esther (Deutsch) Spira, was born and educated in Richwald, Hungary, immigrating to the U.S. in 1879. He and worked as a laborer for a steamship company before migrating to central Ohio where he worked as a peddler and shopkeeper.

ST. CECILIA PARISH traces its origins to a public meeting, held in November 1913, at which the Catholic residents of Cleveland's MOUNT PLEASANT neighborhood resolved to petition Bishop JOHN P. FARRELLY for the creation of a new parish to serve their spiritual and social needs.

The ST. CECILIA SOCIETY, probably Cleveland's first permanent orchestra, grew out of the GERMAN Singraf Society. While an exact date of establishment is uncertain, it was actively operating in the 1850s and 1860s. The society presented waltzes and polkas, and in later years it accompanied the Gesangverein in a variety of operatic and choral pieces.

The ST. CLAIR SAVINGS AND LOAN HOLDUP (12 Apr. 1957) was the first bank robbery in history filmed by a hidden camera. The savings & loan, located at 6235 St. Clair Ave., had been robbed twice during the previous 18 months, and as a result it was chosen by Thos.
