LAWRENCE, WILHEMINA PRICE

LAWRENCE, WILHEMINA PRICE (24 Oct. 1919-11 June 1991), administrative secretary of the SAINT JAMES AFRICAN METHODIST EPISCOPAL CHURCH, held state and national offices in missionary societies and organizations for WOMEN, such as Church Women United of Ohio (vice-president) and the National Council of Negro Women (nominating committee chair and vice-president). She was also vice-president for the World Federation of Women's United Nations office. Lawrence was born in Point Pleasant, WV, to Hazel M. Williams and William H. Price. She married William Lawrence; they had one child, Patricia M. Harris. Lawrence came to Cleveland from Pittsburgh, PA, in 1949 to accept the position at St. James AME. In 1985 Wilberforce University granted Lawrence an honorary doctorate. Lawrence died in Washington, DC, where she had lived since 1987, and is buried in LAKE VIEW CEMETERY.
