The CLEVELAND CHAPTER OF THE NATIONAL LAWYERS GUILD is an organization of progressive lawyers, law students, and legal workers founded in 1937, the same year as the national organization. With 96 chapters (totaling 7,000 members) in the U.S., the guild was founded as a professional organization for lawyers who wished to break with the conservatism of other bar associations.

CLEVELAND LAW COLLEGE was created through the efforts of RUFUS P. RANNEY. It was granted a charter and authorized to grant degrees on 5 Jan. 1882, and classes began in the fall of 1885. All of the faculty were either on the bench or full-time lawyers, and classes were held in the old courthouse on PUBLIC SQUARE.

The CLEVELAND LAW LIBRARY, 1W Lakeside Avenue Fl 4, one of the largest membership law libraries in the United States, was founded in 1869 by WILLIAM J. BOARDMAN and leading members of the Cuyahoga bar "for the promotion of the science of the law." The library first opened on the third floor of the old Cuyahoga County Court House at 1219 Ontario St.

The CLEVELAND SURVEY OF CRIMINAL JUSTICE of 1921 was the first thorough study of the criminal-justice system of a major American city and served as a model for surveys in at least 7 states and for Pres. Hoover's Commission on Law Observance & Enforcement (known as the Wickersham Commission), the first such national assessment.

CLEVELAND-MARSHALL LAW SCHOOL was a private evening law school in downtown Cleveland. The result of a merger between the John Marshall and Cleveland Law Schools, C-M was the predecessor of CLEVELAND STATE UNIV.'s Cleveland-Marshall College of Law,

The COURT OF NISI PRIUS, an invitational social club limited to a special membership of lawyers and judges that meets every week for companionship, began when a group of young lawyers that had been gathering informally for fellowship was officially organized by 2 Cleveland lawyers, Homer H. McKeehan and John W. Hart.

COWLES (COWLS), SAMUEL (ca. 1774-22 Nov. 1837) pioneer Cleveland lawyer and businessman, was born in Simsbury, Connecticut, the son of Joseph and Sarah Mills Cowles. A graduate of Williams College, he practiced law in Connecticut for some 15 years before coming to Cleveland in 1818.

CROWELL, JOHN (15 Feb. 1801-10 Mar 1883) was a well-known attorney, supporter of the Republican Party, and public speaker.

CROWLEY, JOSEPH HERRON (23 Dec. 1893-16 Nov. 1984) chief legal council for the City of Cleveland for 24 years and scholar in the field of municipal law, was born in Long Island City, New York, the son of John Francis and Elizabeth Herron Crowley. After his father's death, his maternal grandfather Patrick Herron brought Joe, his older brother John Francis, and his mother to Cleveland in 1895.

CUSHING, WILLIAM ERASTUS (23 Sept. 1853—19 Dec. 1917), a lawyer, served on the Ohio State Board of Commissioners on Uniform Laws (1902-05) and on the American Bar Association committee on uniform state laws. He was related to at least 6 Cleveland physicians. Cushing was born in Cleveland, one of 9 children (and the oldest son) of Betsey M.

The CUYAHOGA COUNTY BAR ASSN. (CCBA) was organized in 1927 as the Cleveland Law Assn. The association was founded by 64 former members of the CLEVELAND BAR ASSN. (CBA) dissatisfied with the operations of the CBA.

The CUYAHOGA COUNTY DOMESTIC RELATIONS COURT, established in 1920 as the Domestic Relations Bureau, is a subdivision of the Court of Common Pleas. It has full equitable power and jurisdiction over all domestic-relations matters, including authority to terminate marriages, divide property, and determine child custody and support payments.

The CUYAHOGA COUNTY JAIL is a detention facility for people who are charged with crimes and awaiting trial in Cleveland, Ohio. The jail has been housed in six different facilities since 1813, with its current facility located in the Cuyahoga County Justice Center, which also houses the Cleveland Police Headquarters and the Cuyahoga County and Cleveland Municipal Courts.

The CUYAHOGA COUNTY JUVENILE COURT, the second of its kind in the U.S., was based on the Illinois Act of 1899 which created a juvenile court in Cook County, IL. It initiated new concepts in the juvenile justice movement and was instrumental in setting national standards for more enlightened treatment of juvenile offenders. Created by the Ohio legislature on 8 Apr.

The DAILY LEGAL NEWS publishes all court activity, including mandatory legal advertising, as the official reporter of Cuyahoga County. It was started on 28 Nov. 1885 as the Daily Court Record by Edmund W. Bowers, a newspaper reporter, and Francis M. Chandler, a deputy county clerk. Located originally in the former county courthouse at Rockwell and Seneca (W. 3rd) St.

The DEBS FEDERAL COURT TRIAL (U.S. v. Eugene V. Debs) in Cleveland resulted from an antiwar speech that the Socialist leader gave in Canton, OH, on 16 June 1918. Debs was charged with violation of the Espionage Act. The trial, which took place in Judge David C. Westenhaver's court from 9-12 Sept. 1918, captured national interest. DEMPSEY, JAMES HOWARD (29 March 1859-2 May 1920), was a prominent lawyer and founding partner of SQUIRE, SANDERS AND DEMPSEY. Born in Shelby, Ohio, he was the son of John and Martha C. (Davis) Dempsey. After attending the public schools in Shelby, Dempsey completed the preparatory college course at the Milnor Hall Grammar School in Gambier, Ohio.

DUNMORE, WALTER T. (15 July 1877-23 Jan. 1945), a noted law professor, was born in Cleveland to Thomas and Elizabeth (Wright) Dunmore. He grew up in Norwalk and graduated from Oberlin College with an A.B. (1900). From 1900-02, Dunmore clerked in the Norwalk probate court which lead to his enrollment in the Western Reserve University Law School where he earned his LL.B. (1904).

EASTMAN, HARRY LLOYD (9 Apr. 1882-7 July 1963), judge of Cuyahoga County Insolvency & Juvenile Court from 1926-60, responsible for innovations that made the court a model for country during the 1940s, was born to Oliver H. and Clara (Bond) Eastman in Butler, Pa., but grew up in Findlay, Ohio. He became a photoengraver, inventing a "perfect ratio rule" measuring device for photoengravers.

FISHER, EDWARD BURKE (c. 1799-c. 1859) was a lawyer involved in several publishing enterprises in Cleveland during the 1840s. He came to Cleveland in 1839 from Pittsburgh, Pa., where he had edited The Literary Examiner and Western Monthly Review. In Cleveland he began the Daily Morning Review in partnership with Calvin Hall in Sept.

FORD, DAVID KNIGHT (10 Feb. 1894-28 Oct. 1993) was a lawyer, businessman, and churchman who took pride in his family roots in New England and early Cleveland. He incorporated the LUBRIZOL CORPORATION, was a director, and served as a trustee of its foundation continuously from its founding until his death.

FORD, HORATIO (23 June 1881-28 Nov. 1952), a banker and lawyer involved in the BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA and in forest conservation, was born in Cleveland, to Ida May Thorp and HORATIO CLARK FORD. He earned his A.B. from Yale University in 1904, his LL.B.

FORD, HORATIO CLARK (25 Aug. 1853-25 Aug. 1915), a descendant of early settlers of New England and Cleveland, was a prominent lawyer, entrepreneur, banker, and civic leader. His father, Horatio Cyrus Ford, came from Cummington, MA in 1837 to (old) East Cleveland, where he married Martha Cordelia Cozad, granddaughter of SAMUEL COZAD.

FRICKE, OTTO L. (1886-4 June 1951), a lawyer who supported GERMANS and German-Americans, was born in Germany, came to the U.S. in 1909, and graduated from Cleveland Law School. He worked as a clerk, bookkeeper, auditor, and treasurer before entering real-estate. By 1926 he established a law practice with Joseph C. Calhoun, Jr. and Henry W. MacLeod.
