CITY PLANNING. Like most American cities, Cleveland began as a speculative venture in real estate. Conceived as the capital of New Connecticut, the city was laid out in 1796 by surveyors with the original Moses Cleaveland expedition. The plat, a faithful reproduction of a New England town, with its characteristic commons, failed to treat either river or lakefront as a public amenity.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS began as a hamlet in 1901, was incorporated as a village in 1903, and became a city in 1921.

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS LANDMARKS are of two types, those designated on the national level and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and those that have been designated locally. The local designations are done by the Cleveland Hts. Landmark Commission, which was created by ordinance in Oct. 1973.

CUYAHOGA HEIGHTS, originally part of NEWBURGH Twp.

EAST CLEVELAND, originally part of East Cleveland Twp.

EUCLID, originally part of EUCLID TWP., incorporated as a village on 14 Feb. 1903 and as a city in 1930. In 1914 a portion of the village's western edge was annexed to Cleveland, reducing its size to 10 sq. mi.

EUCLID TOWNSHIP, incorporated in 1809, originated from actions taken by Gen. MOSES CLEAVELAND several months after beginning the surveying of the Western Reserve.

FAIRVIEW PARK, originally part of ROCKPORT TWP., was incorporated as the village of Fairview in Sept. 1910, following the formation and subsequent division of the hamlet of Goldwood. Most of Goldwood was subsumed into Rocky River.

GARFIELD HEIGHTS, originally part of the village of NEWBURGH, split off in 1907 as the village of South Newburgh and incorporated as the city of Garfield Hts. in 1930. It is located southeast of Cleveland and occupies approx. 6.75 sq.

GATES MILLS (inc. 1920) is a village located in the Chagrin Valley bounded by MAYFIELD HTS.

GLENWILLOW, originally part of Solon Twp., was created by the AUSTIN POWDER CO. as a "company town" in 1892. It is a tiny village occupying 2.2 sq. mi.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, located 18 miles northeast of Cleveland, became a village in 1920 and a city in 1967. Occupying 5.7 sq.

HIGHLAND HILLS was created out of WARRENSVILLE TWP..

HUNTING VALLEY,originally part of Orange Twp., incorporated as a village in 1924. It is an 8 sq. mi. (7 sq. mi. in Cuyahoga Co. and 1 sq. mi. in Geauga Co.) residential village of private estates, farm acreage, and large suburban homes, located approx. 15 miles east of downtown Cleveland.

INDEPENDENCE is a residential and industrial suburb located about 8 mi. south of Cleveland.  Covering 9.7 sq.

LAKEWOOD is a 5.5-square-mile, streetcar suburb just west of Cleveland. Its boundaries are Lake Erie to the north, W. 117th St. to the east, Berea Rd. and I-90 to the south, and the Rocky River to the west.

LEE-SEVILLE is a Cleveland neighborhood and Statistical Planning Area (SPA) on the city’s southeast side. It is bounded roughly by Miles Ave.

LINNDALE  (inc. 1902) is the smallest village in Cuyahoga County. Located southwest of downtown Cleveland, it encompasses only .08 square miles (less than 1 dozen blocks).

LYNDHURST, incorporated as the village of Euclidville in 1917, was originally part of EUCLID TWP. It was renamed Lyndhurst in 1920 and incorporated as a city in 1951.

MAPLE HEIGHTS incorporated as a village in July 1915 and as a city on 1 Jan. 1932. It is a 5 sq. mi. residential and industrial community approx. 10 miles southeast of downtown Cleveland.

MAYFIELD HEIGHTS, originally Mayfield Twp., incorporated as a city in 1950 with a mayor-council form of government.
