Disposing of Solid Wastes

Disposing of Solid Wastes

How to Dispose

  • Glass: Place inside of a cardboard box or broken glass box. Once the box is full, it should be closed securely with tape. The words “sharps” or “glass” should be printed or written on the outside of the container.
  • Metal: Dispose of in regular trash receptacles.
  • Plastics: Containers can be disposed of in the regular trash or recycled if they have the recycle codes #1, #2, #3, or #5.

Glass Chemical Bottles

Glass chemical bottles cannot be recycled because laboratory glassware is typically made with boric oxide (borosilicate glass) which can withstand higher temperatures. The presence of borosilicate glass, which is indistinguishable from other glass, will cause imperfections in recycled glass, keeping the glass from being able to be used commercially.
