Biography

Sue Tyler

Tyler has built businesses and led financial and operational transformations in the health and property and casualty insurance industries. Her leadership skills are based broadly across finance, operations and P&L roles for companies ranging in size from startup through Fortune 100. She has experience acquiring and integrating companies and has successfully navigated complex regulatory environments.
Tyler is currently bringing her healthcare payer experience and passion for innovation to early and growth stage healthcare and technology companies. She serves on the board of HealthPlan Data Solutions, a pharmacy data analytics company and as board observer for Healthy Roster, a provider of software solutions for patient engagement, care coordination and telehealth. Previously she represented Cleveland Clinic Ventures on a portfolio company board. She is an active member of North Coast Ventures serving on screening, due diligence and portfolio support committees. She serves as an Entrepreneur-in-Residence for Case Western Reserve University.
As the chief financial officer (CFO) and treasurer of Medical Mutual of Ohio, a $3 billion company providing health insurance and third-party administrative services for groups and individuals, Tyler provided strategic and financial leadership in a turnaround situation. She led the finance, accounting, healthcare network management, actuarial and treasury departments. During her tenure as CFO, the company’s equity and surplus increased from $120 million to over $1 billion and the company diversified through multiple acquisitions and new product introductions. Tyler oversaw an investment portfolio of $1.2 billion and managed relationships with regulators, external auditors and the board of directors.
As executive vice president, operations and chief experience officer (CXO) of Medical Mutual, Tyler transformed the operations and brought focus to the customer experience. She was responsible for multichannel service delivery including call centers, websites, customer self-service tools and mobile capabilities. Under her leadership, her team increasingly relied on data analytics and advanced customer insight tools to inform customer experience strategies and investments. She implemented new technologies and enhanced analytics to ensure the integrity of $6 billion in annual claims payments. Tyler implemented new leadership development and onboarding programs and led a team of 1,000 across five locations.
Tyler served for a decade at Fortune 100 Progressive Insurance during some of its most formative and meaningful years of growth and development. Hired as manager of finance, she was quickly appointed assistant vice president and held a variety of management positions including division controller and auto product manager. She left Progressive to build a large multi-state auto insurance business for a start-up division of another property and casualty company. In just four years, the business grew to $300 million with operations in 18 states. Tyler was promoted from senior vice president of marketing to division president. Her experience also includes her efforts as founder and CEO of an independent start-up.
Tyler received a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a master’s degree in business administration from CWRU. She began her career with Price Waterhouse with responsibility for the financial audits of several SEC registrant clients and is a certified public account (inactive).
Tyler is an engaged civic leader. She was recognized by the YWCA with the prestigious Woman of Achievement Award and by the Ohio Diversity Council with the Top 15 Business Women in Ohio Award. Tyler chaired major United Way and the American Heart Association events and has served on several non-profit boards. Tyler is a member of the Private Directors Association.
She and her husband Bill have two sons, Mike (25) and Jimmy (20). Her interests include adventure travel, scuba, sweeps rowing, cycling, golf and college football.
