Academic Cleaning Schedule

The following custodial tasks are performed in academic and administrative buildings:

Daily routine tasks

Classrooms and Lecture Halls:

Classrooms are cleaned nightly after the final class.

  • Clean and re-supply chalkboards and whiteboards
  • Empty waste containers; check or replace liners
  • Clean/dust sills and other surfaces; instructors' tables, lecterns, etc.
  • Sweep, dust mop, or wet mop floors to remove dirt/debris/spills
  • Vacuum carpet
  • Count and align chairs

Offices:

Offices are thoroughly cleaned once per week on a scheduled day.

  • Empty waste containers; check or replace liners
  • Sweep, dust mop, or wet mop floors to remove dirt/debris/spills
  • Vacuum carpet
  • Dust furniture/fixtures as needed
  • Secure windows and doors

Note: Days that offices are not cleaned trash cans should be placed outside of the office and/or suite door for trash removal.

Laboratories:

Laboratories are thoroughly cleaned once per week on a scheduled day.  Lab floors are dust mopped nightly.

Note: Custodial Services does not clean bench tops in labs unless they have been cleared by Environmental Health and Safety.

  • Empty waste containers; check or replace liners
  • Sweep, dust mop, or wet mop floors to remove dirt/debris/spills
  • Vacuum carpet

Restrooms:

All restrooms are cleaned, sanitized, and restocked nightly.

  • Empty waste containers; check or replace liners
  • Clean and sanitize sinks, toilets, and urinals.
  • Disinfect partitions/dividers
  • Remove graffiti
  • Clean mirrors
  • Restock soap and paper dispensers
  • Wet mop floor with disinfectant cleaner
  • Clean window ledges

Lobbies/Entrances/Corridors:

Public areas are thoroughly cleaned and serviced nightly.

  • Empty waste containers; check or replace liners
  • Sweep, dust mop, or wet mop floors to remove dirt/debris/spills; move walk-off mats
  • Vacuum carpet and carpet type walk off-mats
  • Remove cobwebs
  • Clean entryway glass
  • Clean and disinfect water fountains
  • Check and refill hand sanitizer dispensers; replace batteries

Vending/Lounge/Open areas:

  • Clean chairs and table tops
  • Empty waste containers; check or replace liners.
  • Wipe down the outsides of waste containers and also the surrounding walls
  • Sweep, dust mop, or wet mop floors to remove dirt/debris/spills
  • Wipe down the exterior surfaces of refrigerators, stoves, and microwave ovens

Stairwells:

  • Sweep, vacuum, dust mop, or wet mop floors to remove dirt/debris/spills
  • Dust handrails as needed
  • Disinfect door knobs, handles, push bars, and handrails weekly

Elevators:

  • Wipe down walls, doors, and call buttons with disinfectant
  • Remove hand prints, smudges, and graffiti
  • Vacuum interior cab, door tracks, and entrance doors on each floor

Monthly routine tasks 

  • Wash the insides of waste receptacles.
  • Wash restroom walls with disinfectant.
  • Machine scrub all restroom floors with a germicidal cleaner.
  • Dust window blinds.
  • Bonnet clean high traffic areas in corridors, classrooms, and lobby entrances.
  • Extract all floor mats in building entrances.

Annual routine tasks 

  • Strip and refinish floors in offices, labs, lounges, etc.
  • Wash walls in offices, corridors, lounges, etc.
  • Dust and damp wipe all light fixtures and other stationary fixtures.
  • Shampoo all carpet
