June 2024 Newsletter: Summer Learning Institute Expands Thanks to Y.O.U. Partnership

This summer, the university’s Provost Scholars Summer Learning Institute (SLI) has expanded its programming through a partnership with the nonprofit workforce development organization, Youth Opportunities Unlimited (Y.O.U). Thanks to the partnership, the SLI will run for a total of six weeks, instead of four. In addition, upon completion of the SLI, participating Provost Scholars will earn either a $400 honorarium, or, if they apply to Y.O.U.’s Summer Jobs program, they will be paid $13.50 per hour. The time commitment for students is approximately 30 hours per week.

The university’s Summer Learning Institute is an exclusive opportunity for Provost Scholars, who are students in grades 8 through 12 attending H.W. Kirk Middle School, Ginn Academy, Cleveland School of the Arts or Shaw High School. Students are nominated to and selected for the Provost Scholars program to expand their creative, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills and to participate in a variety of activities at the university. The students also form mentoring relationships with CWRU faculty members. Provost Scholars in the Summer Learning Institute receive ACT test preparation, math and science instruction and participate in advocacy workshops and field trips. At the end of the SLI, they showcase their learning with a capstone project. Learn more about the Provost Scholars program
