Welcome to this month's edition of the School of Graduate Studies newsletter to faculty advisors! Below you will find information on upcoming deadlines, academic policies, news, and more. Past newsletters will be archived on our website for you to review any time you wish.

Important Upcoming Dates

Please make sure you and your students are aware of these important dates and deadlines. Some may require your review, approval, and signature.

Academic Policy Briefs

Waiver of Registration

Students who were registered for at least one credit hour during the spring semester may be eligible to waive registration for the summer semester, if they submit all final materials, including the Waiver of Registration form, to gradstudies@case.edu by Friday, June 9. Your student must also apply to graduate in SIS. The Waiver of Registration form does not require your signature as advisor but international students must also have it signed by International Student Services (ISS).

Applying for Summer Graduation

If your student has completed or will complete all graduation requirements this semester they will need to apply in SIS for August graduation by Friday, June 9. If they applied to graduate in spring 2023 but did not complete all requirements they must apply again this semester. All graduation materials (for students not qualifying for the Waiver of Registration) must be submitted to gradstudies@case.edu by June 9.

New Associate Provost of Grad Education

To better advance the student experience on all levels, CWRU has created two new associate provost positions. BME professor Jeff Capadona will start this fall semester as the associate provost for graduate education and work directly with the School of Graduate Studies to oversee the development and review of graduate and professional degree programs at the University.

In addition to Dr. Capadona's appointment, music professor Kathleen Horvath will become the new associate provost of academic affairs this summer.

19th Annual Graduate Student Award Ceremony

The 19th annual Graduate Awards Ceremony was held at the Tinkham Veale University Center on Wednesday, May 3 to recognize our amazing students and their continued outstanding work on campus, around Cleveland, and beyond. Nearly 150 students were honored with awards from the School of Medicine, the College of Arts and Sciences, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, the Weatherhead School of Management, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, the Center for International Affairs, the Case School of Engineering, and the School of Graduate Studies, presented by faculty, staff, and students from across campus.

The ceremony also honored this year's four winners of the prestigious John S. Diekhoff Awards for Faculty Teaching and Mentoring with remarks from the student-led selection committee:

Commencement 2023

Over four hundred graduates were recognized on Friday, May 19 in the School of Graduate Studies diploma ceremony to join nearly one thousand Master's and doctoral students who earned their degrees in August 2022, January 2023, and May 2023!

For those who did not attend Commencement, diplomas are available in the Graduate Studies office (Tomlinson 203) during normal business hours until Friday, June 2. Students may pick up their diploma or email gradstudies@case.edu to designate someone to retrieve it on their behalf. After June 2, all remaining diplomas will be mailed to the student's Diploma Mailing Address on file with the UniversityAll academic and financial obligations must be resolved for diplomas to be released.

Later this summer video of our ceremony will be posted to the University's YouTube channel.
