Welcome New Students!
Welcome to our new students beginning in spring 2021! Graduate Studies New Student Orientation will be held online in Canvas, divided into asynchronous modules accessible anytime from anywhere in addition to optional live Zoom sessions. The Canvas course will open the week before classes begin. You will receive an email notifying you that the orientation modules are open.
We look forward to meeting you after the New Year and welcoming you to the CWRU community!
Required COVID "Reorientation" Training
To continue to protect our community's health and well-being, all students must attend a virtual COVID-19 "reorientation" training by this Sunday, January 17. This training is mandatory even if you completed it in fall 2020. Please see the January 12 message from the Vice President for Student Affairs for details.
Congrats to Winter Graduates!
You did it! Degrees for students who completed their work during the fall 2020 semester were awarded on Friday, January 15. There is no ceremony at this time but all winter graduates will be invited to attend Commencement on Sunday, May 30.
Look for an email sent from our office with detailed instructions on how to acquire your diploma. You earned it!
KSL Lobby Open for Pickup Service
If you need books and other materials, Kelvin Smith Library is currently open for scheduled lobby pickup service only, Monday through Friday from 11:00am to 4:30pm. See KSL's website for more details and more spring schedule updates.
January 2021 Session Continues
The remote-learning special January session continues. The final day to Withdraw from a course is also the last day of classes for the term, Friday, January 29. No tuition will be refunded. The main part of the spring semester will begin the following Monday.
Last Day to Register for Spring Classes
What's worse than the cold? Forgetting to register for spring classes! Make sure you enroll before Tuesday, February 2 to avoid the $25 late-registration fee. The final day to register or make any enrollment changes for the spring semester is Friday, February 12.
Student Medical Plan Waiver
Do you have health insurance? If you're already covered, make sure to waive your Student Medical Plan before the end of the drop/add period on Friday, February 12. Already waived your Student Medical Plan in the fall? No need to waive it again, the waiver applies to spring semester as well!
Please note: If you are staying on the Student Medical Plan for spring, your coverage year began January 11.
One-to-One Fitness Plan Waiver
Is your New Year's resolution to get fit? Then you're in luck! Every graduate student is automatically enrolled as a member of One-to-One Fitness which includes numerous online programs. However, if weight training, pilates, and cycling aren't your thing, you also have the option to waive this plan by Friday, February 12 for the spring semester. If you did waive in the fall you must do so again this semester. If you do not have a One-to-One membership, you still have access other athletic facilities and gyms on campus (availability may be limited due to current health safety restrictions).
Waiver of Registration
Missed last semester's deadline to apply to graduate? If you've completed all graduation requirements, but did not meet the fall graduation deadline, you may be eligible to waive class registration for spring. Here's how:
- Submit all final materials for your degree as listed here, including the Waiver of Registration form (included in the downloadable file).
- International students must have the waiver of registration electronically signed by International Student Services (ISS).
The waiver of registration deadline is Friday, February 12. Once completed and electronically signed please email the form to email@example.com.
We recognize that many CWRU students use names other than their legal names to identify themselves. Check out our Preferred Name policy to see how you can change your preferred name on rosters and in SIS by filling out the Preferred Name Form. Please note that adding a preferred name is different than a Name Change Request, which requires legal documentation and shows up on all official university documents.
Passphrases Required for CWRU Login
To increase online security, all new or updated passwords for your CWRU network ID are required to be in the form of a passphrase, a string of words (including spaces) at least 12 characters long. Everyone must be using a passphrase by Monday, January 18 but you should switch now to ensure you have no difficulties accessing online resources. Review details and requirements.
Considering a Career in Teaching?
Grad students and postdocs can sign up for the non-credit UNIV 401 Advanced Professional Development for University Teaching Seminar to provide an introduction to pedagogical skills for future faculty. The seminars meet on Tuesdays during the main spring semester. Enrollment is limited to 15 students in each section. Grad students can enroll in SIS; postdocs should email firstname.lastname@example.org. Send any questions to Elise Geither at email@example.com.
Diekhoff Committee Members Needed!
Be a part of a 40 year CWRU tradition to recognize graduate faculty for their exemplary contributions to the education and development of students through advising, mentoring, and classroom teaching.
We are looking for motivated Graduate Studies students interested in contributing to the selection of this year's John S. Diekhoff Award winners. This group will interview and select the recipients of these distinguished graduate teaching and mentoring awards, presented annually to two CWRU faculty members who have demonstrated excellence in teaching and two who have done so in mentoring. New CWRU Care Virtual Counseling Visits
To ensure all students, including those currently residing far from campus, are able to have access to mental health care from providers familiar with students’ unique needs, the University has launched CWRU Care, a 24/7 service to connect quickly online with counselors regarding specific issues free of charge.
Take the Leap: Beyond Your PhD
Join the CWRU Postdoc Association for Taking the Leap: Exploring Post-Academic Opportunities Beyond Your PhD on Thursday, February 4 at 4:30pm. This online panel discussion is for PhD students and postdocs to start thinking about the various opportunities that exist beyond academia and to hear from PhD graduates and postdocs who have "taken the leap" and transitioned to non-academic careers. Graduate Student Greek Life House Director
The Office of Greek Life is seeking graduate students for Greek Life House Director positions to assist Greek Life staff in building operations and assist the Greek chapter's leadership and members. House Directors will be provided a furnished apartment and semester stipend. Applications are open now and interviews will be conducted February 12 to 26. Adverse weather could strike anytime. Make sure you're signed up and your contacts are up-to-date for CWRU's Rave Alerts so you'll be immediately informed of cancellations due to weather, street closures, emergencies, and other important notifications.
UMC Student Social Media Ambassador
Love taking pictures? Like talking up what's great about CWRU? University Marketing & Communications is looking for student social media ambassadors! Grad students are welcome to apply - and we'd love to see grad representation on their team! Applications are due by Friday, January 29.
Child Care Resources
As the pandemic continues, options for child care continues to be a concern for many. Students and postdocs can schedule appointments for 3 hours of drop-in child care at One-to-One Fitness or Next Level Fitness. Space at any given time is limited to a maximum of 6 children per location to ensure social distancing. You can also review additional child care resources from the University.
Grad Assistants for ResLife Needed!
Residence Life is in need of graduate students to join their team for the 2021-2022 academic year as Assistant Residential Community Directors. The ARCD is a 10-month live-in position to support the creation and facilitation of an integrated residential learning environment for several hundred undergrad students. Read more and apply now! Applications and recommendations are due January 27 with interviews in February.
