New Vaccination Requirements

As per the July 15 communication from the President and Provost, beginning Friday, July 23 at 5:00pm EDT all students, faculty, and staff coming to campus must have:

  • submitted proof of full or partial vaccination to the University's secure health record system, or
  • notified the University that you have not been able to access an eligible vaccine (or are partially vaccinated) and wish to receive one from the University, or
  • formally requested a medical or religious exception from the appropriate university office.

Any student, faculty, or staff who have not completed one of the above options by July 23 will be contacted by the University and must wear masks and maintain physical distance if on campus. Failure to comply may affect enrollment, housing, or employment. See the July 15 communication and this FAQ for complete details.

Additional Updates to COVID-19 Policies

As of July 21, those who are vaccinated are not required to wear masks indoors on campus except while in a patient-care setting, engaging in an athletic or physical activity, or taking university transportation. Beginning July 22, daily health attestations is now paused and not required before coming to campus; anyone not vaccinated will have to resume as of August 23.

All students, regardless of vaccination status, starting academic programs in August will be required to participate in three weeks (8/23 - 9/10) of baseline COVID-19 testing and wear masks while in class during those weeks.

Fall New Student Orientation is Online

Welcome new Summer and Fall students! We're just under a month away from Fall Orientation and the start of Fall semester classes. All students who began during the Summer term or are starting in the Fall are invited to the New Graduate Student Orientation which will be hosted on the Canvas platform beginning the week of July 26. 

Grad Orientation is a self-guided, online resource designed to help prepare you as a graduate student at Case Western Reserve University. Once the orientation course is open, you can access it anytime from anywhere with an internet connection.

The orientation modules will contain valuable info about Diversity 360, Kelvin Smith Library, Access Services, Health and Counseling Services, the CWRU Police, [U]Tech, Academic Integrity and more!

Some live welcome events will be held on Tuesday, August 17.

In the meantime, please visit the "First Steps" Information on our website for setting up your email, finding off-campus housing, learning about community resources, and more. Also continue to complete items on the New Student Checklist. Make sure to upload your photo for your student ID card by August 1!

Register for Fall 2021 Classes

Registration is open in SIS for Fall 2021 courses. The Add/Drop period ends on Friday, September 3. You won't be able to register if you have a hold on your account in SIS; click below to find out how to remove it.

  • Advising Hold: Automatically placed onto your account twice per year and must be removed by your advisor before you can register for courses.
  • Past Due Balance Hold: Placed by Student Financial Services, these holds can affect registration, ordering transcripts or receiving your diploma. Login to SIS to pay your balance.
  • Financial Preregistration Hold: Placed by Student Financial Services. Simply click on the Hold link in SIS and walk through the steps to remove it.
  • Planned Program of Study (PPOS) Hold:  Students who have not submitted a PPOS in SIS by the end of their second semester (or earlier for some Masters programs) may have a registration hold placed on their records. Once submitted, your advisor must review and approve the PPOS in SIS. The hold will then be processed and removed overnight. 
  • Missing Transcripts / Test Scores / Recommendations: A registration hold placed by Graduate Studies Admissions if you have missing documents that need to be submitted. Login to the online application system here to view what is missing. For specific questions, email gradadmit@case.edu.
Waiver for Medical and Fitness Plans 

Do you have Health Insurance? If you're already covered, make sure to waive your Student Medical Plan before the end of the drop/add period on Friday, September 3 to avoid being charged. Also, every graduate student is automatically enrolled as a member of One-to-One Fitness but if you are not interested you have the option to waive this plan also by September 3. If you opted to waive the Student Medical Plan and/or the One-to-One Fitness plan in previous academic years, you must apply again if you intend to waive these plans for the 2021-22 year.

Please note: If you are staying on the Student Medical Plan, your coverage year begins August 1.

CWRU Take Two

For the remaining two Fridays this month the University will close at 3:00pm EDT including our office in Tomlinson Hall. Please plan accordingly. Beginning the week of August 2 our office will resume normal hours; Monday through Friday, 8:30am to 5:00pm EDT.

Teaching Assistant Training

Graduate Students who will serve as teaching assistants (TA) for Fall 2021 courses are required to participate in TA Training. Students can already register for UNIV 400 in SIS. Online training in Canvas will begin August 1 and the required online synchronous trainings will begin August 16. International students who are required to take the SET test (English assessment) should schedule an appointment as soon as possible with Elise Geither. If you have questions, please contact gtatraining@case.edu.

Campus Community

    Updates to International Travel

    As of this month, the University will no longer require prior written approval for travel outside Northeast Ohio. However, all students traveling outside the United States for a University related or funded activity must apply for approval before your trip from the Center for International Affairs by emailing studyabroad@case.edu. This authorization is required for both US residents and international students when traveling outside the country. Domestic travel does not need approval from the Center. Please periodically review current travel policy as they may be updated at any time.

    Funding Available for Conferences!

    Need funding for an upcoming conference? If you are presenting, you can apply for one of our two travel awards: the Graduate Student Travel Award (GSTA) and the Verhosek Fund (V-Fund). Check out our fellowships and awards page and carefully read the eligibility and specific requirements for each award.

    Please be aware of updates in the travel policy beginning this month as related to the pandemic. Our application forms and required documentation have been revised accordingly. International travel requires prior approval from the Center for International Affairs as indicated above. Students must abide by the University's travel policy especially concerning health safety such as vaccination status, quarantining, and testing. You must also review the travel policy immediately before your trip in case of updates. If you have a question about this policy, check the FAQs. We continue to encourage caution while traveling as the pandemic persists.

    Weekly Farmers Markets on Campus

    Two days each week this summer you can get some fresh produce at a farmers market on campus! On Wednesdays you can find the market by the Crile Building near the Health Education Campus and on Thursdays in front of University Hospital's Lakeside Building on Adelbert Road. The farmers market will be open from 10:30am to 1:30pm both days.

    Also the CWRU Farm in Chagrin Falls has resumed operating its Farm Stand every other Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00pm.

    Help Share Inspirational Stories

    Graduate students are invited to participate in a new student organization by helping to share the stories of local inspirational figures and promote interdisciplinary communications and collaborations.

    Take a Walk on Campus

    Going for a walk is a great way to get exercise, fresh air, see more of University Circle, and relax. Check out these maps for some walking paths you can follow to get outside and get moving this summer!


      Graduating this year? Register for Beyond the Professoriate, an interactive workshop on Friday, August 13 at 12:00pm EDT, on what you need to know about finding a job and how the resources and programming in Aurora can help you succeed in launching a meaningful career. 

      After attending this webinar, you will be able to:

      • Explain the importance of the stages of PhD Career Transition.
      • Identify the components and timelines of an effective job search.
      • Develop SMART goals and a plan of action for your job search.
      • Identify resources in Aurora that can help you in your job search.
