Graduate Student Award Ceremony
After two years virtual, the 18th annual Graduate Awards Ceremony returns to the Tinkham Veale University Center Ballroom on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:00pm EDT! More than a hundred students will be honored with awards from the College of Arts and Sciences, the Case School of Engineering, the Weatherhead School of Management, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, the School of Medicine, the Center for International Affairs, and the School of Graduate Studies, presented by faculty from across campus. The ceremony also honors this year's four winners of the prestigious John S. Diekhoff Awards for Faculty Teaching and Mentoring with remarks from the student-led selection committee.
We are looking forward to celebrating your achievement during Commencement at the School of Graduate Studies Diploma Ceremony on Sunday, May 15 at 2:30pm EDT in the Veale Convocation, Recreation and Athletic Center!
Cap and Gown
Students participating in the ceremony are required to wear academic regalia. If you have not ordered already, please do so ASAP. The deadline to order regalia is Friday, April 29. Make sure to get the correct hood and tassel color for your degree group!
Check-in for graduates will be at 1:30pm in Horsburgh Gym (part of the Veale complex); please use the Natatorium entrance, not the main entrance to Veale. Faculty marshals and staff will help line you up into your degree groups and make sure you have your GradPass. You must keep your GradPass on you until it is your time to walk across the stage. Please only bring belongings into Horsburgh you carry on your person; no items may be left behind in the gym when we proceed to the diploma ceremony at 2:30pm.
Our ceremony does not require tickets so please invite any friends and family you wish. Your guests should use the main entrance to Veale Center. They may enter after the undergraduate diploma ceremony is finished and must be seated before 2:30. If you wish, your family may join you as you walk across the stage. Please have them pay close attention to the order of degrees so they know when to approach a family area near the right side of the stage.
Any friends and family who cannot attend in person are invited to watch the Livestream broadcast of the ceremony.
Doctoral students who wish to be hooded by your advisor should encourage them to register as attending on the Commencement website. If your advisor is not able to hood you, we will have an alternative faculty hooder present.
All accommodation requests submitted when registering for Commencement are being processed. If you have additional requests or questions please email Grad Studies. Please know there will be accessible shuttles and carts to help transport students and guests across campus. There are also no stairs between the entrance to Veale and the hall the ceremony is being held in. Space will be made in guest seating for wheelchairs and strollers.
Full Term Withdrawal
If you need to discontinue all studies this spring semester and withdraw from all classes, the deadline to initiate a term withdrawal is SIS is Monday, April 25 (the last day of classes but before finals). Prior to this, students should also discuss this with your advisor, dean, or Grad Studies staff. A grade of "WD" will be posted to your academic record for dropped courses and no tuition will be refunded (after the fifth week of classes). See the Registrar's site for more information about a full term withdrawal and a step-by-step instructional guide. No one will be allowed complete withdrawal after the last day of classes.
Register for Summer and Fall Classes!
If you haven't yet, register now for Summer and Fall 2022 through SIS! Some courses will have the option to be conducted as distance learning. Be sure to talk with your advisor and check SIS for any holds that may prevent registration; see below on how to remove them.
- Advising Hold: Automatically placed onto your account each semester and must be removed by your advisor before you can register for courses.
- Past Due Balance Hold: Placed by Student Financial Services, these holds can affect registration, ordering transcripts or receiving your diploma. Login to SIS to pay your balance.
- Financial Preregistration Hold: Placed by Student Financial Services. Simply click on the Hold link in SIS and walk through the steps to remove it.
- Planned Program of Study (PPOS) Hold (for applicable programs): Students who have not submitted a PPOS in SIS by the end of their second semester (or earlier for some Masters programs) may have a registration hold placed on their records. Once submitted, your advisor must review and approve the PPOS in SIS. The hold will then be processed and removed overnight.
- Missing Transcripts / Test Scores / Recommendations: A registration hold placed by Graduate Studies Admissions if you have missing documents that need to be submitted. Login to the online application system here to view what is missing. For specific questions, email email@example.com.
Considering a Career in Teaching?
Grad students and postdocs can sign up for the non-credit UNIV 401 Advanced Professional Development for University Teaching Seminar this summer or fall to provide an introduction to pedagogical skills for future faculty. The seminars meet once a week and enrollment is limited in each section. Register for UNIV 401 in SIS and email firstname.lastname@example.org with any questions.
Volunteer for the Commencement Ceremony!
The School of Graduate Studies invites you to volunteer at Commencement for our afternoon Diploma Ceremony on Sunday, May 15 to help make sure the day is filled with wonderful memories for our graduates!
SGS is in need of volunteers to keep all graduate organized, help with check-in, direct graduates to their spots, help them with their gowns/hoods, etc. Graduate Studies will send more detailed information as we get closer to the event, but arrival time would be around 11:00am. The Diploma Ceremony starts at 2:30pm. Lunch will be provided.

Runners Needed for Hudson Relays
GSC is looking for student runners to join the graduate team at the Hudson Relays, one of the oldest traditions at CWRU. The run will be held on Saturday, April 23 beginning at 10:00am EDT. Participants will be receive a complimentary water bottle and backpack from GSC as well as a t-shirt for the event. Interested grad student runners should contact firstname.lastname@example.org. FSM Grants for Women-Identified at CWRU
Women-identified individuals at CWRU in underrepresented fields and researching feminism or women and gender equality can apply for grants from the Flora Stone Mather Center for Women to support professional development and research. think[box] Summer Project Fund
Full time graduate students can apply for the new Summer Project Fund from Sears think[box] to support work on a personal project, team project, design competition, or entrepreneurial prototypes. Up to $1,000 in awards are available and projects can be of any topic from any field of study. The deadline to apply is Sunday, May 8 but students are encouraged to apply early while funding lasts.
Travel Funding Still Available!
Need funding for an upcoming conference? If you are presenting at a conference (in-person or virtual) you can apply for travel funds from the School of Graduate Studies. If you have funding from your department or another academic unit, apply for our Graduate Student Travel Award (GSTA) and we may match up to $500 for domestic and up to $1000 for international travel. Recipients of the Verhosek Fund (V-Fund) can be reimbursed up to $250 of travel expenses (no matching or department approval required). Cleveland Humanities Collab Summer Seminars
Graduate students can apply to participate in the two summer seminar sessions hosted by the Cleveland Humanities Collaborative. Each session - July 18-22 or August 1-6 - will focus on a text selected from the 2022 Anisfield-Wolf Book Award winners to emphasize dialogue and creates space for collaborative discussion of strategies in teaching, educational outreach, and community engagement. Application info will be posted soon and there is a $1,000 award for participating.

For graduate students, most circulating books will have a fixed due date that falls at the end of the spring semester. You can also log into your account to renew items and check the status of OhioLINK and SearchOhio requests.
Grad Appreciation Week 2022
Thank you for participating in a wonderful Graduate Student Appreciation Week! We are happy to host GSAW annually the first week of April to celebrate our amazing graduate students. In partnership with organizations such as One to One Fitness, Student Activities and Leadership, the Professional Development Center, College of Arts and Sciences, Weatherhead School of Business, and the Office of Multicultural Affairs, we appreciate everyone coming together so that we could have an awesome week of events.

Summer Campus Shuttles
With the end of the spring semester approaching, many of the shuttle routes through campus and Greater University Circle will soon be modified, including some on hiatus until the fall. Please make note of the changes for summer so you aren't stuck waiting for a bus!
A Late Spring
The campus may not yet be in full bloom but still make some time to go outside, get some fresh air, and take a relaxing break at Wade Lagoon or anywhere in the Circle and enjoy the emerging colors of the season!
Join the CWRU Postdoc Association for the VWR Vendor Show on Wednesday, April 20, from 10:00am to 2:00pm in the Wolstein Research Building lobby to learn about what's new in reagents, supplies and research techniques, plus a chance to win prizes! Over 20 vendors will be present.
Early registration is encouraged but walk-ins welcome. Lunch will be provided.
The Center for International Affairs invites all students graduating next month to decorate their graduation caps on Tuesday, April 26 from 1:00pm to 4:00pm in Tomlinson Lobby. All graduate and professional students are invited to the May General Assembly meeting of the Graduate Student Council on Thursday, May 5 at 5:30pm in Adelbert Hall's Toepfer Room or via Zoom.
The second round of GSC elections will also be held at the meeting for the open positions of Co-Directors of Advocacy and Diversity and Director of Professional Development; applications for these positions are open until Friday April 22.
