Submit Graduation Materials by December 10!

If you have applied to graduate for Fall 2021, you must submit your final materials by 5:00pm EST on Friday, December 10. Submission of materials includes the completed format check and the uploading of your approved Thesis or Dissertation to OhioLINK. Please plan to communicate with your advisors and committee to make sure all approvals are completed. All forms can be downloaded and electronically signed. All forms and material can be emailed to or printed copies dropped off at our office (Tomlinson 203).

Degrees will be conferred (awarded) on Friday, January 14, 2022; information on how to obtain your diploma will be emailed to you on or around that date. As there is no Fall semester Commencement ceremony, January graduates will be invited to participate at Commencement in May 2022. Watch for details in the first few months of the new year.

End of the Semester

The last day of classes this semester is Friday, December 3 with final exams from December 7 to 15; check the Final Exam Schedule to see when your exams will take place. Double check any dates with professors or your department before planning winter break travel in order to ensure you are present when required.

Full Term Withdrawal

If you need to discontinue all studies this fall semester and withdraw from all classes, the deadline to initiate a term withdrawal is SIS is Friday, December 3 (the last day of classes but before finals). Prior to this, students should also discuss this with your advisor, dean, or Grad Studies staff. A grade of "WD" will be posted to your academic record for dropped courses and no tuition will be refunded (after the fifth week of classes). See the Registrar's site for more information about a full term withdrawal and a step-by-step instructional guideNo one will be allowed complete withdrawal after the last day of classes.

Register for Spring 2022

Registration is open in SIS for Spring 2022 courses. You won't be able to register if you have a hold on your account in SIS; click below to find out how to remove it.

  • Advising Hold: Automatically placed onto your account each semester and must be removed by your advisor before you can register for courses.
  • Past Due Balance Hold: Placed by Student Financial Services, these holds can affect registration, ordering transcripts or receiving your diploma. Login to SIS to pay your balance.
  • Financial Preregistration Hold: Placed by Student Financial Services. Simply click on the Hold link in SIS and walk through the steps to remove it.
  • Planned Program of Study (PPOS) Hold (for applicable programs): Students who have not submitted a PPOS in SIS by the end of their second semester (or earlier for some Masters programs) may have a registration hold placed on their records. Once submitted, your advisor must review and approve the PPOS in SIS. The hold will then be processed and removed overnight.
  • Missing Transcripts / Test Scores / Recommendations: A registration hold placed by Graduate Studies Admissions if you have missing documents that need to be submitted. Login to the online application system here to view what is missing. For specific questions, email

If you are enrolled in the Student Medical Plan, please make sure to register your spring courses early to ensure no lapse in your coverage. If you have coverage this fall it will continue until January 9, 2022 at 11:59pm. If you are taking classes in the spring and enrolled in the medical plan it will begin on January 10, 2022 at 12:01am. If you register after January 21 (the end of Drop/Add), your plan will only become effective on the date you register (not earlier).

Considering a Career in Teaching?

Grad students and postdocs can sign up for the non-credit UNIV 401 Advanced Professional Development for University Teaching Seminar in the spring semester to learn effective teaching strategies useful across major disciplines. Register for UNIV 401 in SIS and email with any questions.

Leave of Absence (LOA) Requests

Unsure if you'll be able to continue your studies in the spring semester? A leave of absence may be requested for up to two academic semesters if circumstances arise which make you unable to maintain your registration. Find the Graduate Studies Leave of Absence policy here. Campus Community

Three Minute Thesis Competition (3MT)!

We are planning the very first Three Minute Thesis competition at CWRU! 3MT celebrates the exciting research conducted by grad students around the world. This competition cultivates students' academic, presentation, and research communication skills. Presenting in a 3MT competition increases your capacity to effectively explain your research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience. View the slides from a recent virtual info session to learn more. The deadline to register for the competition is Friday, January 28, 2022.

Thanksgiving Break

Our offices in Tomlinson and the rest of the University will be closed Thursday, November 25 and Friday, November 26 for Thanksgiving. Also, access availability to some buildings and services on campus (such as KSL, gyms, shuttles, dining, etc) may have reduced and altered hours over the long weekend and the preceding days so check in advance to plan accordingly.

Food Resources for Students

Almost everyone is thinking about a Thanksgiving dinner next week but for some the next meal could be uncertain. Did you know there are food pantries on campus for students facing food insecurity? If you're in need please review this list and find which best applies to you.

Also the Office of Graduate Student Life hosts a food pantry when able; bookmark this the following link and check back to see when appointments become available.

Vaccines and Boosters

All eligible students, staff, and faculty may make appointments to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster on campus. Also if you have a child ages 5 to 11 who still needs to be vaccinated, watch for communication if additional appointments for children become available in the coming weeks.

Testing Before Traveling

Whether your travel this month or next requires a COVID-19 test or you just want to check for your own well-being, free testing on campus is available in the Robbins Building (next to the BRB). If you will be required to show proof (such as returning to the US after traveling internationally or via certain airlines), please request a Vault test and you will be emailed acceptable documentation. Additional testing will be offered in December before the end of the semester and winter break. See the November 16 communication for more details.

Funding Available for Conferences!

Need funding for an upcoming in-person or virtual conference? If you are presenting, you can apply for one of our two travel awards: the Graduate Student Travel Award (GSTA) and the Verhosek Fund (V-Fund). Check out our fellowships and awards page and carefully read the eligibility and specific requirements for each award. Also, students must abide by the University's travel policy especially concerning health safety. Please review the travel policy and current health safety guidelines (at CWRU, at your destination, and your transportation providers) immediately before your trip in case of updates. If you have a question about this policy, check the FAQs. We continue to encourage caution while traveling as the pandemic persists.

Physical Resource Center

The Physical Resource Center helps students with financial burdens obtain useful items. The "freestore" is run by students and open to volunteers to help. Register on CampusGroups to schedule a visit.

Catch the Mather Dance Collective (MaDaCol) fall concert  November 18 to 20 at 8:00pm featuring new dance works by graduate dance students El-drick Aboagye, Shadrach Arthur, and Haiyan Chen (winner of the 2021 Cleveland Arts Prize: Kathryn Karipides Scholarship in Modern Dance).

Head over to Dave's Cosmic Subs on the northern side of campus to join the Graduate Student Council for another Happy Hour on Friday, November 19 at 7:00pm! First drink on GSC!

Join the Graduate Student Council and the Office of Post-Graduate Planning & Experiential Education for an online workshop on Monday, November 29 at 5:00pm EST to give grad and professional students tips on navigating interviews and negotiating your future salary. See what the Graduate Student Council is up to! Register for the next general assembly meeting on Tuesday, December 7 at 6:00pm in Adelbert Hall's Toepfer Room. Dinner will be provided.
