During orientation, all International Graduate Teaching Assistants (ITAs) will be required to sign up for and complete a Spoken English Test (SET), an oral pronunciation and reading comprehension exam that helps determine placement within (or exemption from) the UNIV 402 sequence. The SET, which takes roughly 20 - 30 minutes to complete, is administered by TA Training staff and Mentors.
The SET is scored on a 100-point scale. Here are the specific score breakdowns with associated placements:
- 0 - 60 = UNIV 402A: Professional Communication Skills in English
- 61 - 70 = UNIV 402B: Focus on Fluency
- 71 - 80 = UNIV 402C: Presentation Skills (Also enroll in UNIV 400A)
- 81 - 100 = EXEMPT (Enroll in UNIV 400A)
