Policy Statement

The university is committed to providing a total compensation package that enables the university to attract and retain highly skilled and talented employees for all positions. A competitive total compensation package includes an effective salary administration program and a comprehensive benefits plan which serves to:

  • Mirror the university's commitment to Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity
  • Maintain consistency within Case Western Reserve University employee classification and employment status
  • Recognize individual contribution
  • Provide individual choice in managing health and welfare benefits
  • Recognize the diverse needs of the employee population.

Salary Administration

The Provost's office and the Vice President for Medical Affairs, or designees, are responsible for setting compensation guidelines for faculty.

The Compensation office of the Human Resources Department is responsible for designing and administering the salary program for staff. The Student Employment office is responsible for designing and administering the salary program for student employees. All of these offices are committed to offering the appropriate hiring salary based on the university salary administration program, incorporating market pricing and internal budget constraints. Employees are responsible for working to the best of their ability to maintain their salary level and to be eligible to increase their earning capacity. Supervisors are responsible for being aware of the goals of the program and for administering the program in a timely and equitable manner.

Faculty compensation review is handled and communicated through the appointment process. Faculty should refer to the Faculty Handbook for information on appointments and salary. Staff compensation review is done on an annual basis as described in the Staff Salary Plan. Student compensation review includes both incremental and merit reviews as outlined in The Employment Handbook for Students. It is University policy to conduct periodic reviews of these salary administration programs and to recommend salary range adjustments that reflect current competitive practices.


A comprehensive benefits program provides:

  1. reasonably priced health and welfare coverage,
  2. salary protection,
  3. paid time off,
  4. educational assistance,
  5. retirement planning, and
  6. other amenities associated with working for a large university community.

The university offers a comprehensive benefits program by benefit category to all full-time employees and some benefits to part-time employees. The health and welfare coverage, called Benelect, is described in the policy on health and welfare coverage. Educational assistance, retirement planning and campus amenities are described in the benefit brochures available to all employees as well as in other policies in this section. The Benefits Office is responsible for administering and updating the benefits program. Employees are responsible for selecting and using their benefits prudently, and in the most cost-effective manner.
