Senior Advisor, Former Managing Partner, Jones Day (Cleveland, Ohio)
Richard W. (“Dick”) Pogue is senior advisor (i.e., full-time independent consultant) at Jones Day in Cleveland, Ohio. A graduate of Cornell and Michigan Law School, he joined the firm in 1957. Over the years, his primary fields of practice were antitrust, corporate takeover work, and commercial arbitration/mediation. During his nine years (1984-1992) as managing partner, Jones Day grew from 335 to 1,225 lawyers; entered international markets (during his stint, the firm opened offices in London, Paris, Riyadh, Geneva, Hong Kong, Brussels, Tokyo, Taipei and Frankfurt); and became the second-largest U.S. law firm. Today the firm has more than 2,500 lawyers in 44 offices around the world.
Over the years, Pogue served as a director of various publicly held companies and chaired many major civic organizations.
A trustee emeritus of CWRU, he has served as chairman of the board of the University of Akron. Over the years he has spoken frequently on professionalism in the practice of law. He served as the (first) chair of the Dean’s Advisory Council at Michigan Law School (there he and his non-lawyer son David, delivered the Commencement speech in May 2017).
