On October 20, 2017, a good friend, mentor and colleague to many of us, James McElhaney, passed away. Though Jim retired nearly 17 years ago, his 25 years of service to the law school helped permanently shape our school’s curriculum and experiential education movement.
On February 6 at 4:30 p.m. in the Moot Courtroom, we invite you to join us for an evening that will pay tribute to the impact Jim had on all those that knew him, and in the most fitting way possible, celebrate his lasting legacy.
Jim was instrumental in bringing trial advocacy and trial tactics to the forefront of legal education and his stewardship of the Ault Mock Trial Team catapulted the School of Law to one of the premier mock trial programs in the country. Jim’s writings for the ABA Litigation journal, as well as his Trial Notebook, guided generations of students and attorneys through the process of developing their own voices for trial work.
His use of humor, understated presentation, tenacious preparation and genial nature endeared him to every student fortunate enough to take his classes, impacted every attorney to take a continuing education course from him, and nurtured the development of trial tactics professors across the country.
To celebrate Jim’s life and legacy, CWRU School of Law is hosting a remembrance with presentations by faculty and alumni, as well as a presentation by Professor Thomas Geraghty of Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law, on Jim’s impact on the legal profession.
After the remembrance, the Ault Mock Trial Team will present the annual Team Night Competition at 7 p.m. as the team prepares for the Texas Young Lawyers Association National Trial Competition.
The remembrance and team night will be held in the Moot Courtroom at the School of Law.
