An insightful memoir seen from the author’s inevitable modulation through time.  Oates is a sensitive time traveler; for her, memory serves a transcendental function. Her advice at story’s end is three-fold: “Three things in human life are important: the first is to have sympathy, the second is to have sympathy, and the third is to have sympathy.” Oates’ early short stories reveal a nascent gift for story-telling.
