The passing of Elizabeth II, whose tenure as queen spanned seven decades, calls to mind the musical creativity of her period. We will explore operas such as Britten’s Billy Budd, and Peter Grimes, as well as the contribution of the acclaimed artists, British mezzo, Dame Janet Baker, and the Canadian tenor, Jon Vickers. The influence of great Italian musical models is inevitable, but the originality of British composers is not to be missed.
