Urban centers have been important facets of the human existence for more than 5000 years. This class will focus on the ancient Greek city for which we have the most information, Athens. Continuously occupied since the Neolithic period, this class will be a survey of the formation of Athens from its beginnings through the Roman period. Topics will include formation of its urban structure, religious sanctuaries, monumental architecture, houses, economics, and social interaction.
