Two riveting memoirs examine life in 20th century China. Wild Swans recounts the harrowing experiences of three generations of women from pre-World War I and the Japanese occupation to the rise of Mao. Life and Death in Shanghai is an inspiring account of the author’s exceptionally brave and undaunted resistance to indoctrination and physical deprivation during Mao’s “Cultural Revolution.” These books are informative and provide significant insight into contemporary China.
