In “The U.S. and the Holocaust”, a 3-part film series released in September 2022, award-winning documentary filmmaker Ken Burns examines America’s response to one of the greatest humanitarian crises of the twentieth century. The series documents how American public indifference, bureaucratic red tape and restrictive quota laws led to tragic consequences. How do we reckon with this history? Join Holocaust scholar Professor Cathy Lesser Mansfield for a discussion of the series and its devastating findings. This class will meet for two sessions, each of which will focus on one episode of the documentary. Attendees should watch the episodes on their own, and are encouraged to bring historical and moral questions to class. Watch: “The US and the Holocaust”
