First published in 1899, the novel found new life in the mid-twentieth century, when it was rediscovered and celebrated as a feminist masterpiece. A beautifully-written story of a woman’s claiming of her life, the novel will be supplemented with background information on Chopin’s Louisiana life as well as the novel’s afterlives and celebration as a landmark in regional writing and women’s writing.
