Nathaniel Hawthorne’s darkly Romantic literature has remained in continuous publication since the author’s death in 1864. While Hawthorne is most renowned for The Scarlet Letter and The House of the Seven Gables, his substantial collections of short stories – Twice-Told Tales (1832, 1847), Mosses from an Old Manse (1846), and The Snow-Image and Other Twice-Told Tales (1851) – have significantly contributed to his literary fame, even influencing modern cinema. We will delve into a curated selection of Hawthorne’s short stories, exploring their place within the Romantic movement in American literature. Furthermore, we will explore how Hawthorne’s contemplation of the themes of sin, guilt, and morality remains relevant in our society.
