Join us as we consider a century’s worth of great writing in 100 Years of the Best American Short Stories. Every year, beginning in 1915, a new edition of The Best American Short Stories arrives in bookstores and libraries. Those individual volumes are wonderful artifacts that not only provide us with access to amazing literature but also beg us to consider the picture that emerges of the state of American writing and publishing. Instead of focusing on what the stories might say about life in 2023, we’ll look at the best of the best. Master short story writer Lorrie Moore’s 40 selections provide us with the perfect opportunity to read a wide variety of classic and contemporary authors and to come to our own conclusions about their answers to the unspoken question of what it means to be American.
