In this course, we will read and discuss the first (1855) edition of Leaves of Grass to understand and appreciate Whitman's enduring resonance in American culture. Consequently, we shall read and discuss Leaves of Grass in the context of Whitman's life, the impending Civil War, and the transition from romanticism to realism in American literature. Readings will be provided.
