What drives the fascinating women in the work of Tennessee Williams? In this class, we will read, analyze, and discuss six Williams plays from over the course of his career which feature particularly complex female characters: The Glass Menagerie (1944), A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), The Rose Tattoo (1951), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1955), Suddenly, Last Summer (1958), and Night of the Iguana (1961). We’ll consider historical and cultural contexts of these plays, source material, and their subsequent impact on literature, film, and culture since their original productions.
