What was the fate of Jews who fled the Spanish Inquisition for the New World? Ironically, sixteenth-century Jews fortunate enough to escape the torture, executions, or forced conversions by the Inquisition arrived in New Spain only to find that the “Holy Office” was setting up operations in the land conquered by Cortez in 1541. Join us for an enlightening lecture about this period in Spanish colonial history, with particular attention to the fate of the Carvajals, a family of crypto-Jews that included Luis, considered the first Jewish writer in the New World.
