acute weakness, worse on the left side. |
HIV Cerebral Vasculitis:
Cerebral Angiogram; (Top Left) Right Internal Carotid injection (AP
view); (Top Middle) Left Internal Carotid injection (AP view); (Top
Right) Left Vertebral injection (AP view); (Bottom Left) Right
Internal Carotid injection (oblique view); (Bottom Middle) Left
Internal Carotid injection (lateral view); (Bottom Right) Left
Vertebral artery injection (lateral view). Note the prominent
irregularities, including dilated vessels, narrowed vessels, and some
areas that are "beaded". This is the picture of primary
central nervous system (CNS) vasculitis, a rare condition. HIV may be associated with many central and peripheral nervous system complications, either from direct HIV infection, or as a consequence of opportunistic infections or neoplasms. Cerebral vasculitis is a rare neurological complication of HIV, wherein the intracranial vessels develop aneurysmal dilatations associated with either infarction or bleeding. |
