Outline the Porencephalic Cyst

Porencephaly: Axial CT scans. Note the large porencephalic cyst in the right parietal area.

Porencephaly literally means a hole or cavity in the brain. Porencephaly is an extremely rare disorder, usually diagnosed in early infancy. Porencephalic cysts are filled with cerebrospinal fluid, and lined by smooth tissue. They usually result from a prior injury to the brain that occurs shortly after birth (e.g., stroke, infection) but may also occur as a developmental anomaly. Symptoms of porencephaly vary, and often include seizures, cognitive and motor delay, and in some cases, focal neurological deficits.
