Toxoplasmosis

A 25 year-old man with AIDS presented with lethargy, headaches and numbness involving the left side.

Show the Gadolinium Enhancement of the Infection

Toxoplasmosis Brain Abscess: (Left) T1-weighted with gadolinium coronal MRI; (Right) T1-weighted with gadolinium axial MRI. Note the ring enhancing lesion in the region of the right anterior thalamus.

Toxoplasma gondii is often seen as an opportunistic infection in patients with AIDS and other immunocompromised individuals. The lesions are often located deep in the basal ganglia and thalamus. Note, however, that this MRI scan appearance is also consistent with tumor and other infectious etiologies.
