Guiding Principles

Training and educating graduate students in the biomedical sciences is a complex process that continually evolves based on the rapid progression of scientific discovery and the ever-expanding technological landscape. At Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, we understand graduate programs must continually modify their approaches to meet these modern-day needs.

Our students are expected to master their overall disciplines, become experts in their fields of research, and gain expertise in diverse yet interrelated professional skill sets. We work to clearly define, widely communicate and integrate those skill sets across all our PhD disciplines.

Moreover, we apply a set of common principles or goals for educating all graduate students in the School of Medicine and find these goals help to guide our programs in a course or curriculum development. To this end, the School of Medicine’s Graduate Education Office, in collaboration with the graduate program directors, developed a formal set of guiding principles for the education and training of all PhD students.
