Learn more about your aid process

New MD Students

Welcome to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine! We are excited that you have been accepted to the University Program and are ready to start the financial aid process. Please carefully follow the steps below. 

Step 1

If you have not done so already, please enter your social security number on your iApply Status Page.  Your social security number will be used to create your student record and provide you access to the Financial Aid Application.  The Financial Aid Office also requires your social security number to access your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Step 2

The Admissions Office will email you your CWRU Network ID and Student Identification number which will also be accessible in the Financial Aid section of iApply.  Your CWRU Network ID will need to be activated before you begin the CWRU Financial Aid Application.  Follow the instructions in the email and/or the iApply Financial Aid section to for activate your CWRU Network ID. It is important to note that it may take about 24 hours for the activation to complete as Network IDs are propagated throughout various university servers.

Step 3

Once your CWRU Network ID has been activated, you are ready to begin the financial aid application process.  Please start by completing the CWRU Financial Aid Application, which can be found on your My Financial Aid Portal. While filling out this form, please note that you must select which Financial Aid Process you will go through (Need-based Aid and Federal Loans or Federal Loans-Only). The answer to this question in the application will dictate what you see requested of you in the My Financial Aid Portal.

Instructions for accessing the CWRU Financial Aid Application:

  • Head to the My Financial Aid Portal and log in using your activated CWRU Network ID and password
  • At the top left-hand corner, you will see the 'Menu'. Click on this
  • Navigate to the 'CWRU Financial Aid Form - Medical'
  • This will take you to a new screen to fill out the form

Step 4

Complete your FAFSA for the 2020-2021 academic year and remember to put our specific school code (E00079).

Complete the following steps if you are requesting to be considered for Need-based aid and Federal Loans. (Do not complete if you are requesting Federal Loans-Only).

Step 5

Complete the 2020-2021 CSS Profile with both parent and student data. Please use school code 1104 for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Step 6

Submit the following documents via the My Financial Aid Portal and any other documents, as requested in the My Financial Aid Portal Documents section. Documents must be uploaded via our secure upload system, the My Financial Aid Portal. We will not accept documents in any other format.

  • Both biological parents’ 2018 income tax return(s) including W-2s and all applicable schedules
  • Student (and spouse, if applicable) 2018 income tax return(s) including W-2s and all applicable schedules (or Student Tax Waiver Form

Current MD Students

Current MD Students should follow the instructions below to complete their financial aid process. This process was put in place to make the overall process easier for current students. We want to reduce stress and simplify as much as possible. As always, please let the Office of Financial Aid know if have any questions or concerns as you move through this process.

Financial Aid Package Options for Current Students

Rollover Package

Get the same aid package you got this year (19/20). This means that you will not have to resubmit tax documents or the CSS Profile and you understand that you will receive the same scholarship and loans as the current academic year (19/20) for the next academic year (20/21).

Assessed/Reassessed for Need-Based Financial Aid

You may want to take this option if something has changed with your family's financial situation and you want to be assessed or reassessed for need-based financial aid for the next academic year. You will need to submit tax documents and the CSS Profile for this option.

Federal Loans Only

You will likely use this option if you usually receive only Federal Loans and want to continue to get those loans.

While filling out the CWRU Financial Aid Form, you must make a selection from the above three options. The selection you make on this application will determine what you see as needed/required in your My Financial Aid portal. Please fill out the CWRU Financial Aid Form first!
 
If you would like a Rollover Package or Federal Loans Only, please submit the following applications:

  • CWRU Financial Aid form (see instructions below)
  • FAFSA (School code E00079)

If you would like to be assessed or reassessed for need-based financial aid, you must submit the following documents and applications:

  • CWRU Financial Aid form (see instructions below)
  • FAFSA (School code E00079)
  • CSS Profile with Parent Data (School code 1104)
  • Parent 2018 Tax Return
  • Parent 2018 W-2
  • Student 2018 Tax Return (or Tax Waiver form)
  • Student 2018 W-2  

The tax documents listed on the previous page should be uploaded onto the secure My Financial Aid portal system

Once you submit documents, you will see a change in the portal where your newly uploaded document will be marked as "Received". It is a manual process us to review each document and approved it for use in the process. Check the portal a few days after you submit your documents to ensure they have been updated as 'Approved'. 


PA Students

PA Students should follow the instructions below to complete their financial aid process. As always, please let the Office of Financial Aid know if have any questions or concerns as you move through this process.

Please submit the following applications to complete the financial aid process: 

  • CWRU Financial Aid form (see instructions below) 
  • FAFSA (School code E00079)

Once you submit your applications, you will see a change in the portal where your applications will be marked as "Received".

Check Your ‘My Financial Aid’ portal

Once you submit documents, you will see a change in the portal where your newly uploaded document will be marked as "Received". It is a manual process for us to review each document and approve it for use in the process. Check the portal a few days after you submit your documents to ensure they have been updated as 'Approved'. 

Instructions for checking your My Financial Aid portal:

  • Head to the My Financial Aid portal
  • At the top left-hand corner, you will see the 'Menu'.
  • Then navigate to the 'Documents and Messages' Look to see which documents are marked as "Not Received', 'Received', or 'Approved'
