New MOOC Available on Coursera: Designing Your Personal Weight Loss Plan

Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) will begin offering a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) entitled, Designing Your Personal Weight Loss Plan. Created by Mary Beth Kavanagh, Senior Instructor and Director of Bachelor/Master’s Education in the Department of Nutrition, the project-based, online course walks learners through creating their own personalized weight loss plan. Kavanagh explains, “Participants will work through all aspects of creating a weight loss plan, including nutrition, exercise, grocery shopping and behavior change.”

Available on Coursera beginning Monday, September 19, the MOOC will provide CWRU and the University’s School of Medicine worldwide exposure - MOOCs are specially designed with the intention of reaching thousands, even tens of thousands, of learners throughout the globe.

MOOC benefits include:

  • Free of charge
  • Open to anyone
  • Potential to use the MOOC towards credit for a paid degree
  • Makes education from the best universities accessible
  • Self-paced learning
  • Fosters peer learning

The Designing Your Personal Weight Loss Plan course includes two lessons a week over a five- week period. The MOOC can be taken at the learner's pace - it doesn't need to be completed in one, five-week period. The MOOC can be accessed through Coursera at coursera.org/learn/weight-loss- plan. Users will need to create an account, which can be handled at www.coursera.org.

In addition, completion of this course and implementation of the weight loss plan before November 30, 2016 would meet participation guidelines for the Nutrition Program Incentive for 2016 in the University’s Wellness Initiative. The initiative allows employees to earn insurance discounts by participating in health conscious programs and classes.
