After 40 years of bench research on fundamental questions of basic science, I am transitioning into human subject research. One arm of this new research exploits new methods for multianalyte assays capable of measuring 18 substances simultaneously in a single drop of plasma. A second arm exploits anonymized patient data from electronic records. Analysis and reanalysis of epidemiological data has been a side interest for 40 years, dating back my doctoral thesis, bur recent advances in bioinformatics have created new opportunities for hypothesis testing. My recent human-centered approach represents an extension of my prior bench research into mechanisms of antihypertensive and antidiabetic drug treatments as well as the biological consequences of large and rapid losses and regains of body weight in the setting of obesity.
