Master's Programs

Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine offers a variety of master’s and certificate programs designed to get you there. Our faculty members are energetic, accessible educators who aim to meet your academic needs.


Full-time degree program (Master of Science)

The Applied Anatomy program was established for students seeking a comprehensive education in the anatomical sciences, particularly for individuals pursuing careers as medical health professionals and teachers who desire an advanced degree to enhance their skills and credentials. Many students use their rigorous training in anatomy to improve their academic basis for application to professional schools. Case Western Reserve University medical students may also pursue a joint MD/MS degree program to seek advanced training in the anatomical sciences. The joint MD/MS program is undertaken and completed concurrently with the medical curriculum, particularly if a student enters the graduate program during the first year of medical school.

Anesthesiologist Assistant

Full-time degree program (Master of Science)

This two-year masters program prepares students for challenging careers as certified anesthesiologist assistants. CAAs are highly skilled allied health professionals who work under the direction of licensed anesthesiologists to implement care plans and who are integral members of the anesthesia care team. They provide essential, pain-relieving treatments and are involved in the entire cycle of care, from intake through surgery to post-operative care. The Master of Science in Anesthesia Program is a full-time program that begins in May each year. The MSA Program is clinically-based and highly hands-on, with students beginning their work in the operating room within one month of their start date. The MSA Program is offered at three sites—Cleveland, Ohio; Houston, Texas; and Washington, D.C.—with clinical rotations at more than 80 affiliate hospitals across the country.

The Department of Biochemistry is a renowned center for research and teaching in the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. With over one hundred faculty, staff, graduate, and post-graduate trainees, the department offers you a vibrant and unique environment to being your career in biomedical research. The legacy of the department began with Harland Wood's discovery of carbon dioxide fixation. Faculty continues to carry on the tradition of research excellence with nationally and internationally recognized contributions to biomedical sciences. Graduates routinely go on to further their careers in medicine, research, teaching, biotechnology, and scientific writing.

Bioethics and Medical Humanities

Full-time or part-time degree program (Master of Arts)

The program in Bioethics and Medical Humanities emphasizes the multi and interdisciplinary nature of the field. Since 1995, it has provided advanced training in bioethics for students and professionals who will encounter bioethical issues in the course of their primary careers. Bioethics and Medical Humanities MA students/colleagues have the opportunity to work closely with department faculty in their specialty areas while completing the MA degree in only one year (full-time).

Biomedical and Health Informatics

The Master of Science in Biomedical and Health Informatics offers pragmatic, interdisciplinary areas of study immediately relevant in contemporary health systems or research enterprises. Our programs are unique in that they encompass both biomedical research and clinical care informatics with applications to health care delivery, precision medicine, accountable care organizations, and reproducible science.

Imagine yourself as an analyst on prospective studies to compare treatments or identify genes linked to disease, or analyzing large healthcare data to learn about health care in the real world setting.

If you can picture yourself using your statistical skills to save and improve lives, then you should picture yourself in our MS Biostatistics program! The program was recently redesigned based on input from a wide array of potential employers to ensure graduates have the edge in an evolving marketplace, where biostatisticians are increasingly expected to have complementary knowledge in areas of application. Students can select one of three tracks: Biostatistics, Genomics, and Bioinformatics, or Health Care Analytics. Students complete internships in industry, top-ranked hospitals, and leading research centers, and have the option to complete the program in just 12 months!

Clinical Research Scholars Program

Full-time or part-time degree program (Master of Science)

The master's in Clinical Research in the Clinical Research Scholars Program (CRSP) is a flexible program designed to provide a more rigorous education in clinical research methods coupled with in-depth mentored investigative experience to persons with advanced clinical and/or graduate degrees (e.g., MD, PhD, DDS, MSN, MS) or those wishing for a career in clinical research. The CRSP program consists of three parts: formal didactic modular and semester-long coursework; a seminar series that focuses on communication skills required for career development; and an intensive mentored experience centered on a specific clinical research problem.

Genetic Counseling

Full-time degree program (Master of Science)

The Genetic Counseling Training Program is a two-year program comprised of didactic coursework, laboratory exposure, research experience, and extensive clinical training to prepare you for a future in genetic counseling in a wide range of settings. The program will equip you with the appropriate knowledge and experiences to function as a genetic counselor who can interface between patients, clinicians, and molecular and human geneticists. Upon program completion, you will be prepared to work in a variety of settings including both adult and pediatric genetics clinics, specialty clinics such as cancer genetics and metabolic clinics, and prenatal diagnosis clinics, as well as in areas of research or commercial genetics laboratories relevant to genetic counseling and human genetics.

Dietetic Internships

Master’s Degree in Public Health Nutrition with Public Health Dietetic Internship (MS/PHN)

Full-time degree program (Master of Science)

Recognized as the longest-running educational program of its type in the nation, this program confers a master’s degree in public health nutrition and concurrently provides an accredited dietetic internship for students making them eligible to take the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) examination.

Students in the MS PHN program have a 99% pass rate for the RDN exam and nearly 100% job placement rate within six months of graduation. Students obtaining this degree and the RDN credential pursue careers as dietitians within public health settings including governmental agencies, the wellness industry, and clinical practice. The program can be completed over 20 months on a full-time basis and students can begin coursework in the Fall, Spring, or Summer semesters.

Combined Master of Science (MS) Degree in Nutrition with Dietetic Internship (CDI/MDP)

Full-time or part-time degree program (Master of Science)

Created in 1965, the CDI/MDP was the first such program in the country formed from the collaborative efforts of a private university and independent medical facilities. Students in this program are committed to a career as Registered Dietitian Nutritionists. They complete a Master’s of Science Degree in Nutrition at Case Western Reserve University while simultaneously completing their dietetic internship at one of our partner hospitals (Louis Stokes Veterans Affairs Medical Center, University Hospitals Case Medical Center and the Cleveland Clinic). The CDI/MDP program has a concentration in Research Processes and Applications, providing students opportunities to conduct and present research during the program. Upon completion of the supervised practice/dietetic internship component, students will be eligible to take the Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) examination. The CDI/MDP program has had a 97% RDN exam pass rate over the past five years. In addition, nearly 100% of our graduates are employed within three months of graduation. Students graduating from this program have found employment in a variety of settings such as Cleveland Area Hospitals, Pediatric Hospitals, Academic Medical Centers, Community Hospitals, and within the Food Industry.

Medical Physiology

Full-time degree program (Master of Science)

Case Western Reserve offers you two different opportunities to advance your studies in Medical Physiology. You can elect to complete a traditional curriculum which consists exclusively of classroom work (18 semester hours of core courses in the first year, and 12 hours of electives in the second year), with some students in one year. Or you can elect to embark in a research-intensive curriculum where you will complete the usual core curriculum during the first year. However, during the second year, you can perform original research in the laboratory of a faculty member and write a thesis, in place of elective courses.


Full-time or part-time degree program (Master of Science)

The Nutrition Program can prepare you for a career in a variety of healthcare settings, government or non-profit organizations, corporations, private practice, wellness-related industries and professional degrees such as medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, physician assistant programs. The degree can be completed in one to two years depending on your personal course load. The program offers you flexibility in designing the course of study based on your personal academic and career goals. This programming flexibility also allows you to apply to the dietetic internship programs to complete the internship application required courses (DPD) while also earning your MS nutrition degree. Program flexibility also offers you the opportunity to include in your course of study a concentration in maternal and infant nutrition, geriatrics or sports nutrition.


Full-time or part-time degree program (Master of Science)

The MS in Pathology was designed for students with a background in the biological or chemical sciences who are interested in pursuing advanced coursework in the molecular basis of disease. Graduates often pursue opportunities in basic or clinical research, teaching, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, or government. This coursework is also useful if you are interested in pursuing a professional doctoral degree (e.g. MD, DO, DDS, or DMD) or other health professions degree, since the core curriculum and electives include many topics of medical relevance, including histology, gross anatomy, pathology, cancer and immunology, and can strengthen your professional school application. Elective opportunities include independent study in basic research, clinical research or clinical observerships in Clinical and/or Anatomic Pathology.

Physician Assistant

Full-time degree program (Master of Science)

This new program was designed for students who want to be part of the solution to improving access to health care by providing quality, patient-centered care in a collaborative environment. Graduates of the program will serve as competent physician assistants that function as professional members of the healthcare team in a variety of clinical settings to meet workforce needs. Public Health

Full-time degree program (Master of Public Health)

Through a dynamic program of education, research, and service, it is the mission of the Master of Public Health Program to prepare you to develop, implement, and evaluate authentic solutions to community health problems that promote and protect the health of diverse populations. Our program allows you to connect with a top-rated medical school and renowned affiliated hospitals like University Hospitals and the Cleveland Clinic. We also work closely with local health departments, community organizations, and safety-net providers to provide you with the best learning opportunities.

Regenerative Medicine and Entrepreneurship

Full-time or part-time degree program (Master of Science)

The Master's program in Regenerative Medicine and Entrepreneurship will train individuals to work in academic, and clinical settings to support cellular manufacturing, biotechnology innovation, legal and compliance, and business development activities taking advantage of our strengths across the disciplines of regenerative medicine as a whole.  This unique, interdisciplinary program will provide a rigorous educational pathway targeting individuals seeking the advanced skills and training required to excel in the unique workforce necessary to support the exponential growth and application of the field of regenerative medicine.

Systems Biology & Bioinformatics

Full-time or part-time (Master of Science)

The Systems Biology and Bioinformatics program at CWRU offers you the opportunity to combine both experimental and computational or mathematical disciplines to understand complex biological systems. Upon completion, you will be a scientist who is trained and familiar with multiple disciplines and equipped to conduct interdisciplinary research.

You will understand how to generate and analyze experimental data for biomedical research and to develop physical or computational models of the molecular components that drive the behavior of a biological system.
