New MD Students

Welcome to the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine! We are excited that you have been accepted to the University Program and are ready to start the financial aid process. Please carefully follow the steps outlined on Accepted Central.

Once your CWRU Network ID has been activated, you are ready to begin the financial aid application process.  Please start by completing the CWRU Financial Aid Application, which can be found on your My Financial Aid Portal. While filling out this form, please note that you must select which Financial Aid Process you will go through (Need-based Aid and Federal Loans or Federal Loans-Only). The answer to this question in the application will dictate what you see requested of you in the My Financial Aid Portal.

CWRU Financial Aid Application:

  • Head to the My Financial Aid Portal and log in using your activated CWRU Network ID and password
  • Click on Menu at the top left
  • Selevt 'CWRU Financial Aid Application'
  • This will take you to a new screen to fill out the form

Complete your FAFSA for the 2022-2023 academic year. Add our school code 003137 - Case Western Reserve University to the school list. 

Complete the following steps if you are requesting to be considered for Need-based aid and Federal Loans. (Do not complete if you are requesting Federal Loans-Only).

Complete the 2022-2023 CSS Profile with both parent and student data. Please use school code 1104 for the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.

Submit the following documents via the My Financial Aid Portal and any other documents, as requested in the My Financial Aid Portal Documents section. Documents must be uploaded via our secure upload system, the My Financial Aid Portal. We will not accept documents in any other format.

  • Both biological parents’ 2020 income tax return(s) including W-2s and all applicable schedules
  • Student (and spouse, if applicable) 2020 income tax return(s) including W-2s and all applicable schedules (or Student Tax Waiver Form

Current MD Students

Current MD Students should follow the instructions below to complete their financial aid process. This process was put in place to make the overall process easier for current students. We want to reduce stress and simplify as much as possible. As always, please let the Office of Financial Aid know if have any questions or concerns as you move through this process.

1. CWRU Financial Aid Application:

  • Head to the My Financial Aid Portal and log in using your activated CWRU Network ID and password
  • Click on Menu at the top left corner
  • Select 'CWRU Financial Aid Application'
  • This will take you to a new screen to fill out the form

2. FAFSA (School code 003137 - Case Western Reserve University)

While filling out the CWRU Financial Aid Form, you must select from the three options below. The selection you make on this application will determine what you see as needed/required in your My Financial Aid portal. Please fill out the CWRU Financial Aid Form first!

Rollover Package

Students will receive the same aid package as the current academic year. No need to resubmit parent information via the CSS Profile or tax documents. Students understand that they will receive the same CWRU Scholarship and University Loans as in previous years.

The amount of Federal Loans available remains the same each year. Students will indicate the amount they wish to borrow in the Accept Your Aid process after receiving their Financial Aid Award Letter.

Federal Loans Only

This option is for students receiving Federal Loans only and do not receive university aid. 

Reassessment

This option is for student who wish to be reassessed for need-based university aid. Eligibility for reassessment is approved on the case-by-case basis. This process requires resubmission of the CSS Profile for all parents and parent tax documents. 

Circumstances which qualify for reassessment include:

  • significant reduction in parent income due to job loss or job change
  • sibling(s) beginning their post secondary or graduated/professional education not previously reported
  • burdensome out of pocket medical expenses 
  • change in student marital status
  • change in student household size

Circumstances which DO NOT qualify for reassessment include:

  • spending down savings since starting medical school
  • student income changes because of attending medical school (this is already factored into our assessment process)
  • parent retirement

 


PA / MSA Students

PA and MSA Students should follow the instructions below to complete their financial aid process. As always, please let the Office of Financial Aid know if have any questions or concerns as you move through this process.

Please submit the following applications to complete the financial aid process: 

1. CWRU Financial Aid Application:

  • Head to the My Financial Aid Portal and log in using your activated CWRU Network ID and password
  • Click on Menu at the top left corner
  • Select 'CWRU Financial Aid Application'
  • This will take you to a new screen to fill out the form

2. FAFSA (School code 003137 - Case Western Reserve University)

Check Your Application and Document Status

Once you submit documents, you will see a change in the portal where your newly uploaded document will be marked as "Received". It is a manual process for us to review each document and approve it for use in the process. Check the portal a few days after you submit your documents to ensure they have been updated as 'Approved'. 

Instructions for checking your My Financial Aid portal:

  • Head to the My Financial Aid portal
  • Click on Menu at the top left
  • Then navigate to the 'Documents and Messages' Look to see which documents are marked as "Not Received', 'Received', or 'Approved'
