Visiting Medical Student Program

CWRU SOM no longer accepts Visiting Student applications. Effective January 1, 2020, the CWRU Visiting Student program has transitioned to University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center as the Host Institution. 

Thank you for your interest in completing a Visiting Medical Student elective.

CWRU SOM has four major affiliate hospitals where Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine students complete their clinical rotations. Each of these institutions also offers the opportunity for Visiting Medical Students to share in our outstanding clinical training. Our four major affiliate hospitals are all within an 8.5 mile radius of each other. 

Our four major affiliate hospitals include:

  • University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC)
  • The VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System
  • The Cleveland Clinic 
  • The MetroHealth System

The Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine does not offer research opportunities and/or observerships to Visiting Medical Students.

University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center

Founded in 1866, as the original affiliate of Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center (UHCMC) has a long history of providing exceptional healthcare for the residents of Northeast Ohio. VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System

Affiliated with Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine, School of Dentistry and Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, the VA Northeast Ohio Healthcare System trains more than 1,000 students, residents and fellows each year, encompassing 26 disciplines and involving 50 affiliations with schools, colleges and universities.

The Cleveland Clinic

Consistently voted as one of the nation's best hospitals, the Cleveland Clinic is recognized for its outstanding clinical care and its commitment to academic excellence. Home to the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, a unique medical program that trains students to be physician investigators, the Clinic sponsors one of the largest graduate medical education programs in the country with more than 900 residents and fellows in a wide range of specialties.

MetroHealth

For more than 160 years, MetroHealth has served the medical needs of the Cleveland community and surrounding areas of Cuyahoga County and is a leader among public hospital systems. As a major teaching hospital in Northern Ohio, MetroHealth has maintained a tradition of excellence in academics and research. Intensive training for physicians and medical professionals is offered in many medical specialties.
