Industry Experience

As an MEM Student, you'll have an opportunity to gain valuable industry experience while completing the one-year degree. Industry experience is one of the factors that sets CWRU Master of Engineering and Management (MEM) candidates apart in job searches. Discussing your internship work and industry class projects in interviews can help you get offers.

From industry-driven course projects, to plant tours and internships, this industry experience enables you to connect academic theory with real-world business practices and applications, and are an excellent way to increase your business experience and explore potential career paths. Some MEMs even launch their careers with their internship employers or course project sponsors.

Each MEM student has the opportunity to interview for available internship positions through our industry team based on background and qualifications. If hired, students can earn money as well as gain industry experience outside of the classroom.

An MEM internship will provide you with:

  • Improved understanding of leadership roles, interpersonal skills, and effective communication
  • Increased technical skills through professional practice
  • Improved marketability and broadened professional network
  • Critical insights on how to apply knowledge learned in the classroom to experience gained on the job

Multinational corporations and entrepreneurial enterprises alike tap MEM talent by bringing projects to courses. You’ll gain valuable experience in working in teams that partner with industry contacts and provide important recommendations and presentations to management in areas such as:

  • Market research
  • Competitive analysis
  • Technical feasibility and manufacturability assessment
  • Sourcing
  • Prototyping – creating physical prototypes, not just drawings
  • Marketing or commercialization plans for products in various markets including:
  • Healthcare
  • Industrial
  • Technical
  • Consumer goods
  • Supply chain analyst

In response to workplace needs for technical talent with business management acumen, leaders of companies conceived the idea to create the Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) Master of Engineering and Management (MEM) degree. Our corporate partners’ input over the past 15 years has helped hone the curriculum to ensure that the program stays relevant, leading-edge, and develops students who can quickly meet employers’ current needs—and grow into leadership positions. Our corporate partners enrich the MEM learning experience—and enhance their brands with potential talent—through:

  • Workplace tours
  • Course projects
  • Skills seminars
  • Classroom speakers
  • Internships

Many reap the value they’ve helped create by hiring MEM graduates.
