ACTIVE RESEARCH

Targeted Nanoparticles for Molecular Imaging of Cancer

Developing novel semiconductor nanocrystal probes as a platform technology for molecular-based imaging of cancer, using fluorescence, magnetic resonance (MR) and optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging techniques.

Optical Spectroscopy for In Vivo Disease Diagnosis

Developing techniques and instrumentation for the diagnosis of diseases, such as breast cancer and vulnerable atherosclerotic plaque, in vivo in real time using optical spectroscopy (fluorescence, diffuse reflectance and Raman spectroscopy).

POTENTIAL IMPACT

This research will enable molecular-based rather than conventional anatomic imaging of a wide range of high impact diseases, including breast cancer and vulnerable atherosclerotic plaques that are the culprit lesions responsible for most heart attacks and strokes. Semiconductor nanocrystals, or quantum dots, are highly luminescent materials with narrow, tunable emissions that have the potential to revolutionize biomedical imaging, and take imaging techniques like fluorescence and optical coherence tomography from the bench to the bedside.
