ACTIVE RESEARCH
Design of Catalytic Macromolecules
Using biological macromolecules as a starting point, we use various structural remodeling techniques to obtain molecules showing a desired activity, e.g., catalysis. Currently, we use chimeric RNA molecules based on spliceosomal snRNAs which are thought to have catalytic activity in vivo. Using remodeling techniques, we have proved this hypothesis, and aim at reconstituting various molecular interactions that can lead to an improved catalytic potential |

POTENTIAL IMPACT
This research will provide fundamental new insights into molecular evolution, molecular enzymology and requirements for catalytic activity. In addition, it will help formulate basic principles for intelligent redesign of biological macromolecules and their adaptation for use in diverse settings, including therapeutics and industry.
