BSN Community Outreach

One of Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing’s strategic objectives is to create opportunities for students, faculty and staff to partner with external institutions at the local, national and international levels. Outreach ranges from sharing information about nursing careers with youths to training caregivers of elderly, from assessing health policy and finance among Cleveland communities to preparing to provide disaster relief across the country.

Clinical Learning

FPB students graduate with the advantage of experience. BSN, Graduate Entry, MSN, and DNP students engage in clinical learning at more than 200 Cleveland-area community agencies and organizations each semester.

These premier health care organizations include:

  • University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center: among the nation's leading academic medical centers, forming the largest biomedical research center in Ohio and one of the top 20 in the nation
  • Cleveland Clinic: the second-largest medical group practice in the world and the largest hospital in Ohio; one of 10 U.S. hospitals designated "The Best of the Best" by U.S. News & World Report
  • Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center: recognized for more programs of clinical excellence than any other VA medical center
  • MetroHealth Medical Center: a regional referral hospital that is one of only 19 Level 1 trauma centers, with a burn unit and a rehabilitation facility specializing in spinal cord injuries

Service Learning

For service learning, BSN, MSN and DNP students are matched with a community agency to conduct an agency-identified service project.

Students engaged in service learning provide community service in response to community-identified concerns and learn about the context in which service is provided, the connection between their service and the academic coursework, and their roles as citizens and health care professionals.

International Health Programs

The Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing has a strong legacy and many current activities in international health.  We welcome international students and scholars who wish to come study with our faculty and visit premier clinical sites. In addition, there are a number of opportunities for our students to Study Abroad in International Locations.

Cleveland Metropolitan School District

Nursing students enjoy the opportunity to work with preschool and elementary-age children in the community. They provide health screenings, as well as health education to the children, while learning valuable clinical skills.
