Summer Camp 2009

Flight Nurses in Training to the Rescue

Debris everywhere, smoke, fire, and moaning victims…What normally is a serene picnic area at Case Western Reserve University's Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley became a made for TV-like disaster scene for a mock earthquake and gas line explosion.

Participants in the annual National Flight Nurse Academy Summer Camp, sponsored by the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing, triaged the 75 volunteers who acted out various injuries at the disaster scene. Firefighters from the Auburn Fire Department also took part in the drill.

Two helicopters from the Cleveland Clinic flight nursing team also arrived on the scene.

2009 Participants and Institutions

Cleveland Clinic was the National Flight Nurse Academy’s major clinical affiliate, but other participating institutions included:

  • Aero National, Inc. (air ambulance service)
  • University Hospital of Newark, New Jersey
  • University of Kentucky
  • Seton Healthcare Network (Marble Falls, TX)
  • Lincoln Hospital (Danbury, CT)
  • The Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center
  • Aichi Medical University College of Nursing (near Nagoya, Japan; the Academy’s first international partner)
  • Royal Flying Doctors of Australia (the largest and most comprehensive air-medical organization in the world)

Summer Camp 2008

The National Flight Nurse Academy's sixth annual summer camp once again brought together a strong and cohesive team of advanced practice nurses, paramedics, physicians, pilots, and firefighters to work on simulation exercises focused on the unstructured critical care environment. This year, four nurses representing Aichi Medical University in Japan participated in order to gather experience and information on building their own flight nursing graduate program at their university--the first ever for Japan.

This year also saw the participation of Cleveland Clinic, which became a new clinical affiliate for the Academy.
