Art and the Cosmos: The Eternal Relationship of Science, Religion and Art

The Case Western Reserve University Art and Art History Club is seeking submissions for the 2014 Undergraduate Art History Symposium. Undergraduate students from all disciplines are invited to submit 10-12 page papers exploring the theme “Art and the Cosmos: The Eternal Relationship of Science, Religion and Art.” Papers should convey original ideas or analyses relating to space, setting, or environment within and/or beyond the image.

Possible topics may include but are not limited to: analysis of form and function in religious art and architecture, artistic representations of the unknown and the supernatural, visual and material interpretations of science and religion, and the role of art in chronicling scientific innovation. Papers may address any time period or culture.

How to Participate

Email a copy of your paper along with a completed application form to the SymposiumCommittee@case.edu by February 28, 2014. Students who would like to submit works currently in progress must include a detailed abstract of their paper in the application form and must send a copy of a recently written research paper.

Members of the Art and Art History Club’s Symposium Committee will notify students selected to participate by March 7th. Accepted applicants must give a twenty-minute slideshow presentation. Following the symposium, participants are invited to join the Case Art and Art History Club for a complimentary reception dinner and a tour of the Cleveland Museum of Art. The symposium will take place on Friday, April 11, 2014, 11:30am-5:30pm at the Recital Hall of The Cleveland Museum of Art. This event is free and open to the public.
