Case Western Reserve University Diversity Statement

Case Western Reserve University aspires to be an inclusive environment, believing that the creative energy and variety of insights that result from diversity are a vital component of the intellectual rigor and social fabric of the university. As a scholarly community, Case Western Reserve is inclusive of people of all racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, national and international backgrounds, welcoming diversity of thought, pedagogy, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity/expression, political affiliation and disability. We believe in a culture of inclusion that encourages relationships and interactions among people of different backgrounds, a culture that enhances human dignity, actively diminishes prejudice and discrimination and improves the quality of life for everyone in our community.

Background

In his August 2006 statement "Diversity at Case Western Reserve University: A Personal Declaration," Interim President Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D., said: "We seek to establish a diverse, inclusive and respectful environment at Case Western Reserve University and in all interactions outside the university.

"The task at hand is to resolve how we make attention to diversity an essential and primary function of everyday life at Case Western Reserve University and not simply something that we…relegate to policies and procedures and advisory committees," the president continued.

Case Western Reserve's next step toward making diversity an act in everyday campus life was to create and adopt a university-wide diversity statement.

The President's Advisory Committee on Minorities worked with members of the university community—from faculty, staff and students to members of the university's Board of Trustees—to craft a mission related to diversity. The statement was approved by the university's Board of Trustees and adopted university-wide.

"The university and all of its schools have a number of programs, resources and efforts which support diversity and inclusion," said Kathryn Hall, assistant vice president of institutional diversity and equity. "While we have policies and procedures prohibiting discrimination, this is an effort to publicly embrace our overall inclusion."

"Diversity clearly is vital and fundamental to our university," Eastwood said. "I ask that members of the university community read this diversity statement carefully and incorporate its intent into their lives at Case Western Reserve University at all times."
