Position Objective

The Deputy Provost is a senior member of the Provost’s leadership team. This position collaborates with the Provost and Executive Vice President to develop and implement strategic initiatives and projects that enhance CWRU’s academic mission. Responsibilities include offering valuable input on faculty engagement and advancement, the student academic experience, and the central operations of the Provost’s Office, such as financial and budgeting processes and strategies, human resources, and communications. The Deputy Provost will collaborate closely with all members of senior administration, including Vice and Associate Provosts, and administrators from the Office of the President.

The Deputy Provost is a member of the Provost’s Advisory Council (PAC).

This position requires 100% effort (internal search) and requires status as a tenured full professor at Case Western Reserve University.

Essential Functions

  1. Serve as a key member of the Provost’s senior leadership team. This includes offering strategic advice to the Provost on academic matters and representing the Provost during interim periods when the Provost and Executive Vice President is unavailable. (40%)
  2. Engage in high-level problem-solving to address issues related to the schools/College and Provost’s University General units, ranging from daily operations to crisis management, including matters related to personnel, budget management and financial planning, communications and interdisciplinary projects. (25%)
  3. Provide leadership and oversight for strategic initiatives and projects that align with the Provost’s institutional priorities and CWRU’s academic mission and serve as a key liaison with the Provost between deans, administrators, faculty, students, and other university constituents. (20%)
  4. Collaborate with the Provost and other university constituents to enhance the student academic experience at CWRU and advance the University’s reputation. (15%)

Nonessential Functions

  1. Perform other duties as assigned.


Department: Regular contact with the Provost and other professionals in the office.
University: Regular contact with the deans, senior administrators in the schools, and faculty. 
External: Periodic contact with administrators at other institutions. Frequent contact with members of the community.
Students: Occasional contact with students.

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervisory responsibilities may include but are not limited to oversight of all operations of the Provost’s Office, including finance, faculty advancement, human resources, strategic initiatives and compliance.


Experience: This position is open to CWRU tenured faculty members holding the rank of Full Professor with a strong track record of collaborative leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
Education/Licensing: A terminal degree (e.g., MD, PhD, EdD) is required
