Pathway to Stop Diabetes is a bold, innovative initiative designed to radically transform diabetes research. Our Vision is simple yet revolutionary: find a new generation of brilliant scientists at the peak of their creativity, and provide them with freedom, autonomy, and the financial and professional resources to set them on the road to breakthrough discoveries.
This initiative enables scientists to advance not only their research, but also their careers. Pathway scientists have access to the Mentor Advisory Group, an annual Pathway symposia, select speaking opportunities, and innovative technologies, all designed to foster interactions and collaboration that will enable them to accelerate their research progress.
Pathway seeks to bring new investigators and new perspectives to diabetes research. Supporting scientists with different backgrounds and experience is critical to achieving that objective. Pathway accepts nominations for exceptional investigators with medical and scientific backgrounds who propose innovative basic, clinical, translational, behavioral, epidemiological and health services research relevant to any type of diabetes, diabetes-related disease state or complication. Pathway solicits nominations for candidates in all disciplines as applied to diabetes including medicine, biology, chemistry, computing, physics, mathematics and engineering. In addition, nomination of scientists from diverse backgrounds, including minority groups that are underrepresented in biomedical research, is strongly encouraged. Each institution is allowed a maximum of one nomination. The nomination can be in one of the three available Pathway award types: Initiator, Accelerator or Visionary:
Initiator:
- Award Term: Up to 7 years
- Applicant: Postdoctoral Fellow
- Maximum Funding: $100,000/year (up to 2 years), $325,000/year in Phase II (up to 5 years)
- Support: Project support & PI salary
- Indirect Support: Up to 10% of directs in Phase I, 30% of directs in Phase II (included in “maximum funding” totals)
- Project % Effort Required: 75-100% effort in Phase I; 50-75% effort in Phase II
Accelerator:
- Award Term: Up to 5 years
- Applicant: Early Career Faculty

The Association encourages nomination of individuals from diverse backgrounds, including minorities that are underrepresented in research. For the purposes of this program, underrepresented minorities are defined as individuals of African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaskan Native, and Native Hawaiian or Other Pacific Islander descent.
The official announcement and description of this opportunity may be found on the association’s Pathway Program website and in their Nomination Guide for the program.
Up to $1.625M, amount already includes indirect costs.
Eligibility
Applicants are encouraged to consult with their Associate Deans for Research prior to internal submission to assure they meet eligibility criteria and their projects meet stated program objectives.
For complete eligibility requirements, see page 4 of the respective linked guidelines for the relevant category:
- Initiator Award: Eligible applicants must currently be in research training positions (post-doctoral fellow, research fellowship) and have no more than seven years of research training following terminal doctoral degree. Applicants cannot concurrently hold an NIH K99/R00 grant. Candidates must be identified through institutional nomination; applications will be accepted only from individuals with the appropriate institution support.
- Accelerator Award: Awards are available to early-career diabetes investigators proposing innovative and ambitious diabetes-related research programs. Applicants must hold faculty positions and have demonstrated independent productivity in diabetes research. Applicants may currently hold independent NIH funding (K, U or R awards, including an initial R01/U01) but must not have applied for, or received, an R01/U01 renewal or a second R01/U01 award. Candidates must be identified through institutional nomination; applications will be accepted only from individuals with the appropriate institution support.
- Visionary Award: Applicants must hold independent faculty positions and have demonstrated significant productivity in their current field of research. Applicants cannot have previously received national grant support (NIH, NIDDK, ADA, JDRF, etc.), as either a PI or Co-PI, in diabetes or diabetes-related research.
Submission Process
Internal deadline for submission of a one-page, 12-point-font, 1”-margin LOI is no later than 5:00 pm on April 16, 2018.
The LOI should identify whether the candidate wishes to be considered for the Initiator, Accelerator, or Visionary award type and why, as well as a description of the project.
Please also provide an NIH-style biosketch for the PI.
The LOI and biosketch should be consolidated into a single PDF attachment to an email sent to Stephanie Endy at stephanie.endy@case.edu
Final nominees will be notified of their selection by April 26, 2019.
Final proposal must be received by the Office of Research Administration by June 24, 2019 at 5:00 pm EST.
Final proposal must be received by the sponsor by July 1, 2019 at 5:00 pm EST.
