Five Great Reasons to Chill Out

According to Leland Metheny, MD (CWR '04, MED '08), the occasional bout of stress can be beneficial, stress or excitement before a race, competition or major project can help improve performance. But when stress becomes chronic or difficult to deal with, it becomes a problem.

Here are a few good reasons to relax. Reducing your overall stress level can:

1. Improve your eating habits. People who are stressed tend to eat more, and less healthfully.

2. Increase your feeling of well-being. Who doesn't like feeling good?

3. Reduce your risk. Stress has been linked to certain chronic diseases such as high blood pressure and heart disease. Stress also makes us more susceptible to common infectious diseases, including colds.

4. Help you get some sleep. Less stress means better sleep quality, which will improve your mood, energy and appearance. No dark circles under those eyes!

5. Improve others' perception of you. Think about it: you're happier, fitter, healthier and more beautiful. Who wouldn't want your number?
